Cormac McCarthy is known for writing violent novels. "Blood Meridian," an American classic, contained the Judge, one of the most evil characters in literature.

His most recent novel, "The Road," tells the story of a father and son walking through a post-apocalyptic wasteland. True to form, McCarthy's book seethes with atrocities and fear.

It's also full of hope. The two wanderers are "each the other's world entire," selflessly dedicated to their companion. Amidst the destruction, love lives on.

Soon to be a motion picture, "The Road" is both a triumph of prose and a reaffirmation of humanity's promise. In a world almost dead, there's still something to live for.
