The SMU men's soccer team (5-4-1, 1-0-1 Conference-USA) defeated Memphis University (4-2-2, 1-1-0 C-USA) handily on Sunday, scoring two goals in the second half while allowing none to cruise to victory, 2-0.
The first half was uneventful, as neither team was able to produce any points.
However, in the 59th minute of the second half, sophomore Payton Hickey buried his first goal of the season in the back of the net to give the Mustangs the lead, 1-0. Senior Paulo da Silva and junior Josue Soto set up Hickey's goal.
SMU received an insurance goal when da Silva beat the Memphis goalie, Michael Goodlett, off a free kick from Hickey.
The goal was the fourth of the season for da Silva, and the assist from Hickey was his seventh of the season, which leads the league. Hickey has recorded an assist in three straight games now.
SMU goalie Craig Hill posted his third shutout of the season. This game, however, was easier than usual because none of Memphis's shots were on goal. The Mustangs had nine shots total with three on goal compared to the Tigers' eight shots in total.
The Mustangs will begin a four-game road trip when they take Marshall University on Oct. 10 at 6:00 p.m.
