Hispanic sorority looking for new members

Hispanic-based sorority Sigma Lambda Gamma hosted its first annual ice cream social and info session Monday evening to cap off its events for recruitement.

"This has been a big turnout compared to past events," Sigma Lambda Gamma President Anna Dominguez said. "The class of 2011 is amped on getting involved with Greek Life."

The event was open to all and was held in the Student Activities and Multicultural Affairs Office. Despite being a small sorority with only nine active members, it is the largest in the Multicultural Greek Council (MCG). The sorority's recruitement theme was "Find your strength."

"We wanted to provide a venue for other women to have strength and be an outlet for that discovery," Dominguez said.

Dominguez also went on to say that although the Greek community is living under the microscope this year, she wanted the SMU community to know that Greek life is wholesome and places social and academic life in equally high regard.

Sigma Lambda Gamma has been on campus since 1995. It started here as a student organization, eventually becoming a full-fledged sorority chapter and a welcome addition to the MGC. As a sorority, it encourages its sisters to focus on cultural awareness, academics, ethics, community service and social interaction.

There was a light-hearted atmosphere on Monday evening, as laughter was traded over bowls of ice cream.

"It was a lot of fun, the ice cream was good and the sisters are pretty cool people," junior Cleve Molten said.
