The SMU football team played their annual spring football game on Saturday morning in Ford Stadium. The team divided to challenge themselves and test each other in preparation for the 2018 season.

Head coach Sonny Dykes led the Mustangs through spring practices in preparation for this Saturday afternoon scrimmage. Dykes and the Mustangs took the field to demonstrate their progress.

Courtland Sutton and Trey Quinn left big shoes to fill in the wide receiver department and Tyler Page stepped up. Page’s 55 receiving yards proved the freshman will be a strong receiving option in the fall.

Returning quarterback Ben Hicks donned a green jersey to indicate his non-contact status. The sophomore threw for 131 yards and two touchdowns.

Despite losing seniors, defensively the Mustangs showed strength. The team, led by defensive coordinator Kevin Kane, recorded seven sacks throughout the scrimmage. Freshman Kayce Medlock’s pick six in the first quarter also gave the defense something to celebrate.

At halftime, the initial donors to SMU’s new indoor performance facility were welcomed onto Ford Stadium and honored for their contributions to the endeavor that is expected to be completed by next year.

The scrimmage concluded with a final score of 38-6 and the progress from the Mustangs’ spring training was evident.

The Mustangs will kick off the fall football season at University of North Texas on Saturday, September 1 before hosting TCU on September 7 for the Battle of the Iron Skillet.
