From tacos to cupcakes: Dallas eats for students

By Sue Han (@suefullyhan)

Let’s face it; as students are hitting the fourth week of school, our healthy eating habits are slowly deteriorating. Oreos and potato chips are becoming acceptable meals. Eating is prioritized under studying and sleep more often than we admit. However, there’s good news out there for all you foodies. It is possible to keep your meals interesting and treat yourself when things get tough. Here are a few tips to avoid the slump.

Free Sprinkles Cupcakes on Tuesdays

Treat yourself with a free Sprinkles Cupcake for that paper or test that gets an A. It’s an excuse to have a study break with your friend. Get it before September ends.

Find The Best Tacos in Dallas

Good tacos are not too far away from SMU. Don’t discredit Dallas’s Tex-Mex — you will be pleasantly surprised by how good it is. Spoon University offers a half-dozen taco options near the Hilltop.

Visit a Local Farmer’s Market

Still feeling the study blues? The Dallas Morning News has a roundup of local farmer’s markets where you can buy fresh produce, dairy items and other foods. If you’re up for a drive to Collin County, you can see the infamous Lola the Pig at Lola’s Local Market and get fresh produce that will make you want to cook, or maybe pick up some syrup and pie.

Cheap Dinners at Trader Joe’s

In the mood to cook? A trio of students have created a series of simple and easy recipes for Spoon University. Ingredients can be bought for under $25, and the meals don’t take too long to prepare. Buying a Subway or Chick Fil’ A chicken sandwich every day adds up. These meals are healthier and inexpensive, and may even taste better. Plus, you’ll be so proud of yourself.
