PRESS PASS: Special on Former Dallas Cowboys Player Darren Woodson
05/02/13 12:10 PM
By Courtney Schellin / cschellin@smu.edu Growing up in a rough neighborhood in Phoenix, Arizona, five-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time Super Bowl champion, Darren Woodson, learned from a young age that if he wanted to live life on the streets, he was going to need some serious motivation and determination. “I grew up in a neighborhood where I never met people. No one ever came back to the neighborhood and gave back to us so, I always felt like if I had the opportunity to give something, than why not,” Woodson said. Woodson, recognized as the Bart Starr Man of the year in 2001, has worked with many different charities, but says one that always stands out to him was working with Make-A-Wish foundation with a 7-year-old cancer patient named Sarah. Sarah and Woodson...Uptown: Cedar Springs update
04/30/13 15:55 PM
By Lauren Adams / ladams@smu.edu The birds are chirping, the flowers are a-blooming, and the weather is kind of, maybe, starting to warm up. You know what that means -- It’s time for some spring cleaning, and the streets of Uptown are no exception. Cedar Springs’ ongoing renovation has left a bit of a mess, but improvements are on the way, according to the Uptown owner representative. Here’s the skinny on the construction: New barricades have been installed between Bookout and Pearl, and next the construction crew will cut away the pavement and remove the concrete in this area. A temporary base will minimize inconvenience, allowing for left hand turns, but there will be some periods when turning across the median is not at all possible. The acorn light fixtures in...During times of tragedy, focus on the good in society
04/23/13 12:11 PM
By Lucy Sosa / lsosa@smu.edu A wave of bad news shook the nation last week. Bombings at the Boston Marathon finish line, a drawn out manhunt for the suspects, and an explosion of a fertilizer plant in West Texas left many people feeling cynical about the world. “To be honest, I’m just overwhelmed. I don’t know what to think about the world at this point!” said senior advertising major Katie Roberts. During tragic times like these, solace can be found in the notion that “good” still exists. For a reminder, take a look at BuzzFeed’s recently published article, “24 Small, Meaningful Acts of Kindness.” Some of the acts of kindness include: Reddit users coordinating the delivery of hundreds of letters and packages to a dying man, a driver who gets out of his car to assist an...Weather Watch: Bush Library Opening Week Forecast

04/18/13 12:39 PM
By Courtney Mae Schellin / cschellin@smu.edu Despite the Texas Rangers losing key players like Michael Young and Josh Hamilton going into this season, the Rangers are still winning. Although, with only an average of 3.78 runs, how are they winning? One word: pitching. With pitchers like Yu Darvish (2-1), who is currently leading the American League in strikeouts in his first three starts, it’s clear where the Rangers are getting their momentum. Darvish may be the Rangers golden ticket, but with so many other impressive pitchers in the line-up the Rangers can rotate all day. When Alexi Ogando, Nick Tepesch, Justin Grimm, and Derek Holland are some of the extra pitching options for your team, it’s safe to say you’re solid in the pitching arena. With teams like...
