03/26/12 13:00 PM
By Yolonda Battle, ybattle@smu.edu As men flock to their television sets allowing “March Madness,” chicken wings, pizza and beer to permeate the living rooms, wives and other non-sports enthusiasts are certainly itching to get out the house and away from the TV. Why not consider venturing to the Wyly Theatre Saturday and treat yourself to some Indian and flamenco infused musical vibrations performed by two-time Grammy nominated artist Anoushka Shankar. Performing since the age of 13, Shankar is known for bringing audiences to their feet with her sitar (similar to a guitar) and contemporary Indian dance music, inspired by several different genres including jazz, classical and two of her favorites, flamenco and Indian music. Tickets are still available for as...Out Wide: Reis Wooley
03/25/12 16:48 PM
By Brad Namdar, bnamdarkhan@smu.edu This week Out Wide is doing a profile on North Texas select soccer player, Reis Wooley. Wooley fly’s from San Antonio to Dallas twice a week for training on Tuesday and Thursday’s nights, and again on the weekends for games. Though, he does all this because he plays for the Dallas Texans U-18 Academy Team, one of the top teams in the nation. Here is a profile on Reis Wooley. 1) How long have you been playing soccer? Since I was 3-years-old. 2) Why do you like playing soccer? Soccer is something I’ve always love to do. There is nothing else in the world like it. I really enjoy it. 3) What feelings and emotions do you have before playing in this year’s Dallas Cup? I have no nervous energy at all. I believe we have...Furry Friday: College students to the rescue
03/09/12 08:19 AM
Bridget Bennett, brekow@smu.edu Rescue dogs have become one of the most popular “breeds” of dogs for college students and young adults. Bud Light even picked up on the trend for their super bowl ad campaign this year. The company’s commercial featured “Weego” the rescue dog and encouraged viewers to like the Bud Light Facebook page to help out rescue dogs. While it may be a huge marketing stunt, the Facebook page has received more than 2.5 million likes, proving the overwhelming power of the rescue dog. For many college students looking to become puppy parents, a rescue shelter is one of their first stops. When Abi Clark, an SMU junior, set out to adopt a dog, her first stops were the SPCA (The Society for the Prevention of...Curtains Up: Creative cast weaves art forms in to performance
03/08/12 22:38 PM
Ben Ateku, bateku@smu.edu Adam A Anderson’s original play “This Way to Freedom” is really about freedom. Rehearsals did not begin with the producer dishing out scripts to a nervous but expectant cast. Anderson’s group has seen the play evolve in the last one year through workshop sessions and input from different artists from around the country. Produced by SiHK (The Society for Individuality, Honor and Knowledge), and written as well as directed by Anderson, the student production opened at the Margo Jones Theater at SMU’s Owen Art Center March 7, and runs through March 9. In an article in Meadows “News+Events” online events guide, Anderson said the ultimate goal was to create a travelling show that intertwined and...Curtains Up: Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge set to open, link art and architecture in Dallas
03/02/12 13:44 PM
By Ben Ateku, bateku@smu.edu The performing arts and architectural engineering are set to cross paths this weekend during celebrations marking the opening of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge March 2 to March 4. Visitors to the ceremony will not only appreciate the bridge’s artistic architectural design, but will also have the opportunity to enjoy live performances and art exhibitions marking the opening. The bridge is located between the Woodall Rodgers Freeway and Singleton Boulevard in downtown Dallas. SMU has been involved in the planning of the artistic events, resulting in “Artbust,” a festival for the youth that will take place at nearby Bataan Center. According to Meadows School of the Arts’ online magazine “News and Events,”...Out Wide: U.S. U-23 National Team vs. Mexico
03/02/12 08:27 AM
By Brad Namdar, bnamdarkhn@smu.edu On Feb. 29, the U-23 U.S. men’s national team played against Mexico’s U-23 squad at FC Dallas Stadium. U.S. won with a score of 2-0 over our rivals from the south. Juan Agudelo, scored in the 35th minute and soon after midfielder Mix Diskerud, scored in the 36th minute. The U.S. side looked to have control the entire first half, and felt good about shutting out a usually highly powerful offensive side. “We used the guys looking to be the playmakers,” Agudelo said in the Dallas Soccer Editor. “It was positive the way we implemented what we did in training into the game.” It was great for North Texas to be able to host an internationally friendly, and allow the community to see these players...Furry Friday: Rethinking routines
03/02/12 08:22 AM
By Bridget Bennett, brekow@smu.edu Fido the family dog keeps a pretty strict routine. He’s up at 6 a.m. for a jog with Bob, then its breakfast with the kids, a daytime nap and playtime at 3 p.m. when the kids are home from school. Unlike this fictional cookie-cutter scenario, a college student’s schedule is constantly changing. This means an unpredictable routine for your pup. Phil Marr, an obedience trainer with more than 30 years of experience, said that’s really not such a bad thing. “I’m a firm believer that the quicker you teach the dog your routine instead of his routine, the happier you will be,” Marr said. Sticking to the same routine every day can make a dog accustomed to waking up or going out at the exact same time...
