Deep Ellum Arts Festival

By Lauren Adams / ladams@smu.edu This weekend, Deep Ellum was host to its 19th annual Arts Festival. Friday through Sunday, the colorful street festival featured 200 decorative and visual artists, live music on five stages, and creative food and drink vendors. In addition to the typical fair fare, there were a few fun oddities: one vendor offered pizza and cheeseburgers... in a cone, and another offered gourmet ice pops. And, of course, there were fried cheesecake bites, root beer floats, turkey legs, just about anything you could want on a stick, and plenty of beer to go around. The lively crowd included dogs, on leashes, in purses, and in owners’ arms, tiny tots, the occasional one-man band, and lots of people wandering around with bubble wands. The festival covered six...‘BIG’ love for Dallas

By Adriana Ovalle / aovalle@smu.edu While walking towards the Oak Cliff Bicycle Company for a radio story Tuesday, I noticed these two big blue letters “B” and “G”. I really didn’t give much thought to them that day (I was on deadline for the radio story, remember?) till, I saw them here on campus, connected dots, and became intrigued. It turns out this is all part of a new brand campaign “Big Things Happen Here” that the Dallas Convention Bureau launched last Thursday. The life-size photo props can be found in 22 locations around the city. Oak Cliff’s two are placed at the Dallas Zoo and the Bishop Arts District but of course, I cannot fail to acknowledge the best B & G location of all, SMU. (Waaaa hoooo) C’mon and join the fun – we know you want to – get...PRESS PASS: Dallas Stars fall to Anaheim Ducks 5-2

By Courtney Mae Schellin / cschellin@smu.edu After some questioning over what exactly is behind the Dallas Stars’ decision making in their most recent trades, it’s safe to say that the newest rookies on the team looked pretty good on the ice Wednesday night against the Anaheim Ducks. The Dallas Stars fell short of a victory, losing 5-2, but honestly, the actual score does not give the Stars justice for the effort that they put in the game. They are experimenting with a whole new line-up, and, lucky for Dallas, many of the new additions proved on Thursday night that they’re ready to play. Sure, the Ducks took control of the game early on and were heating up the goal, but it still doesn’t change the fact that the Stars new line-up may be something to keep an eye on for...Weather… Watch or Warning?
04/02/13 12:17 PM
By Danielle Gersh / dgersh@smu.edu Severe weather is something we see a lot of here in North Texas. One day it’s sunny, and the next day we are graced with severe weather. It is safe to say that the weather here is full of surprises! Although the terms sound self explanatory, there is actually a difference between a severe thunderstorm watch and a severe thunderstorm warning. So, what does it mean when we are on a severe thunderstorm watch? Well, severe thunderstorm watch means that there is a potential for severe storms capable of producing damaging winds and/or large hail. When on severe thunderstorm watch, be sure to keep an eye on the Nation Weather Service’s Severe Weather page. Generally, you can go about your day as normal under severe thunderstorm watch. There is always...Ryan Romo’s Family Files Civil Lawsuit in Rape Case

By Maggie Srygley / msrygley@smu.edu Everyone remembers the case of Highland Park high school student Ryan Romo that happened last fall. Romo, 19, a senior and member of the baseball team was accused of raping a girl in the back of his SUV after a concert at the Palladium in October. The case stood out because of the different accusations and stories of girl’s friends who claim that the she was “targeting” Romo before the night even began. Then in January, a grand jury failed to indict Romo for charges of sexual assault. Now, the family of Romo has filed a civil lawsuit against the parents of the girl who accused Ryan of rape. The Dallas Morning News reported, “The lawsuit says the girl’s parents had financial difficulties and used their daughter “as a pawn to further her...
