Recovered addict set to open women’s recovery center inside grandmother’s home

04/16/13 12:24 PM

It was during a weeklong and sleepless methamphetamine binge when Anika Cooper turned 19. Her grandmother, Lilian Grace, hoped to celebrate with dinner, but Cooper’s addiction to ecstasy, acid and marijuana consumed her. She only agreed to a drive-through Burger King meal. “At that point in my addiction, I just wanted to be around people that were on meth,” she said. After dinner, Cooper struggled to climb the stairs into her apartment. Her grandmother had to carry her frail 85-pound frame up the steps. “She was so worried about me,” said Cooper, who has been sober for 17 years. “The look of fear and disappointment on her face was a turning point in my life.” After completing inpatient rehab, Cooper recognized a need for more recovery residences. 04/11/13 12:32 PM

By Courtney Schellin / cschellin@smu.edu Every year the Cowboys start their season with high hopes with Tony Romo leading the way. The problem is, Romo isn’t leading them very far. Actually, he’s not even getting them to the playoffs. Romo is trying to be the “Cowboy” quarterback like we’ve seen from former NFL stars like Brett Favre. The difference is, when Favre went for one deep, he got it where it needs to go. Romo puts it in the hands of his opponents. Last season, Romo put an impressive 4,903 yards up, but with only 28 touchdowns trailed closely with 19 total interceptions, it’s clear why the Cowboys aren’t going places. If Romo wants to be the “Cowboy” the Cowboys need and win a championship, he needs to take some risks, but in the right places -- Rushing. Last...
