Dallas County Republicans await battleground states

11/06/12 23:01 PM

by Daniella Rivera The Dallas Republican Watching Party is well underway with guests and community members mingling and watching election coverage.  More than 1,000 GOP supporters are watching returns on Fox on two giant screens. With projections having been made in 36 states, they’re awaiting calls in battleground states and remain hopeful about the election of standard-bearer Mitt Romney. Dan Branch, who represents University Park in the Texas House of Representatives won re-election, as expected, but it was nonetheless an exciting point for the audience – as was the re-election of U.S. House member Jeb Hensarling. While many Republicans here started out the night very hopeful about the election of Gov. Mitt Romney as president, the mood is shifting as more...

SMU alum cheers on Obama at Democratic watch party

11/06/12 22:18 PM

by Julie Fancher I found it surprising that one of the first people I met while at the Democratic Watch Party at the Hyatt Regency, was an SMU alumnus. Surprising, because in my mind SMU has and always will be a "red" school. Despite the fact that Dallas County is becoming increasingly Democratic, SMU has maintained it's conservatism. While waiting for the ballroom doors to open, I began talking to people outside also waiting anxiously to watch the results of tonight's election. That's where I met David Brown. Brown, who graduated class of '92, is here as a Democrat, in support of President Obama. We began talking about the expansion of the journalism department, and he mentioned that he had even written a few articles for the Daily Campus when he was in school. ...

SMU campus watch party picks up steam as night rolls on

11/06/12 21:53 PM

by Laura Murphy Hughes-Trigg ballroom buzzes as students continue to anxiously watch the electoral voting results live on CNN and ABC News. Almost every table in the ballroom is full with excited students enjoying one another’s company as they discuss the results so far. SMU sophomore Lauren Castle came to the Election Watch party to be with friends and enjoy free food. “I think this is a great event because it gives students a chance to watch the election results who might otherwise not be able to. Watching it is kind of nerve wracking because it’s so close, but it’s fun to be able to watch it with friends and hang out,” she said. Although SMU freshman Janine Ng didn’t vote this year, she still wanted to watch the election results. “I was interested in watching...

Dallas Democratic watch party hosts almost 1000 guests

11/06/12 21:34 PM

by Julie Fancher Less than an hour after the doors opened to the Democratic Party watch party here at the Hyatt Regency in Dallas, the room is overflowing with anxious supporters waiting for the final results of this historical election. As the doors opened at 7 p.m., supporters slowly trickled in. The room was barely filled as the enormous TV was turned on to CNN to watch the results, state by state. Roughly 45 minutes later, extra chairs have been added to the tables to accommodate the growing number of people. Carmen Ayala, who works for Dallas Democrats, said that they were expecting anywhere from 500-1000 people. While the room has been set up for 500 people so far, almost 1000 people have showed up just one hour into the watch party. While the energy in the...
