Spring Trend: Jelly Totes

01/31/12 13:41 PM

by Kian Hervey, khervey@smu.edu We all know fashion trends go in cycles. One minute we are praising bell-bottoms. The next minute they are out. Who knew we'd be seeing jelly make a comeback so soon-- especially in a new way? Michael Kors' spring handbag collection features bold bright neons typical of the season. There are electric orange, hot pink, and turquoise canvas totes that will last through summer. But the jelly totes, made of a very translucent rubber, are a fun spring trend to try. Great for the beach, these totes are perfect for spring break or walking to class. They are easy to clean, easy on your shoulder, and easy to find. More affordable variations of the trend are available at ASOS.com and Piperlime.com. The only question is: are you jellin? ...

Couture Color: Seafoam Green

01/30/12 13:03 PM

by Ashley Wali, anwali@smu.edu, @AshleyNicolaW It takes a truly brave woman to wear a bold color, and Alexis Mabille showcased just that at Paris Haute Couture. Mabille sent a range of colors down the runway, but one color caught my eye. My favorite look from Mabille’s collection was a sea foam green dress, complete with a dramatic headpiece and theatrical face paint- all to create a unique monochrome masterpiece. This distinctive shade of green is a great transitional color from winter to spring, and comes in several options. Rock a unique dress like ASOS’s Skater Dress for a romantic vibe with just enough edge. Stay trendy in a vibrant pair of skinnies and a neutral top for a bolder look. Play it cool in a frothy crochet sweater paired with white skinnies...

Spring Trend: Lovely in Lace

01/28/12 10:51 AM

by Ellie Slater, eslater@smu.edu Lace is a great way to make a statement in a subtle way. Whether incorporating it through a chic cream dress, or an edgy black cuff, it will always be in style, yet reintroduced in a new trendy way each season. Some of the new lace trends that have become popular are tights, jewelry, and shorts, all of which can be worn for class, or a night out, depending upon how your style the outfit. This lace cuff, from Stella and Dot, is one of my favorite pieces of lace jewelry because it is bold, yet chic, and can be worn with jeans and a top or a formal dress. It could instantly add sophistication to a simple outfit. Lace dressed up, or down, is simply lovely when styled right. ...

Thing to Try: Playful Denim

01/27/12 15:32 PM

by Grace Davis, gdavis@smu.edu, @GraceVDavis, stylewgrace.com Let’s be honest, there are only three months left that jeans (or any pants) can be worn at SMU without them sticking to our legs in sweat. So, why not have some fun? Denim is no longer about whether they are skinny, bootleg or flare. Exotic animal prints, pastels and florals are all hitting the shelves this spring. We’ve seen leopard denim earlier this winter, but now you can get take your jeans for a jungle ride from boa print to spotted snow leopard. This spring season is decorated in Easter-egg pastels. Sure brights and neons still have a place in the wardrobe, but pastel denim adds a soft feminine touch to an outfit. Paired with an oatmeal-colored knit sweater, it’s a perfect breezy day ensemble....

Spotted: Back in Black

01/25/12 19:29 PM

by Ellie Slater, eslater@smu.edu The first few days of drop/add week have come and gone, and although this is known as the week to adjust to your fresh schedule for the semester, many ignored the relaxed theme of the week and broke in the semester by dressing to impress. A few outfits took on an edgy feel, such as this student, styling a slouchy black knit cardigan with a black cotton dress, and dark black tights, creating a dressy, yet casual look. I am all for taking a risk with an all black outfit, and especially in this case because the student incorporates bold statement pieces, such as the layering of the gold cross necklaces, high platform-wedge booties, and her olive green over the shoulder bag, to make the look more complex and colorful. This edgy look is worth the...

Hot Accessory: Cuffs

01/24/12 16:53 PM

by Kian Hervey, khervey@smu.edu In a world of charm links, David Yurman bangles and Cartier Love bracletes, giant cuffs are making a statement on wrists this spring. They’re a simple way to refresh your stack and add a sweet touch to a breezy outfit. Ranging from simple to elaborate, these wrist-covering accessories can be perfect for a number of situations. Formal, fun, luxe, and affordable, think about cuffing it this spring. Check out Neiman Marcus' cuff selection here. Or for more affordable options, try Bauble Bar. ...

Fashion Week Dallas

01/20/12 11:53 AM

by Ashley Wali, anwali@smu.edu, @AshleyNicolaW Fashion Week Dallas is finally here! The very anticipated opening night was certainly a success. Mahiri Takai, the genius behind Fashion Week Dallas, began by giving a powerful speech, asserting that “This is not Dallas Fashion Week, this is Fashion Week Dallas." While models were accessorized courtesy of Body Elements and Boot Glams, upcoming brand, the SOCIAL list, stole the show with the collection. Designers Vanita Tahim and Sidra Zaidi showcased several of their frothy frocks, complete with detailed embroidery, sequins, and daring cutouts. Even their menswear designs were trendy, with clear military influences. Attendees also enjoyed an exclusive preview of Carolina Herrera’s SS 2012 Collection (which...

01/18/12 13:37 PM

By Rebecca Marin ramarin@smu.edu, @RebeccaMarin, personal blog Staying stylish on the Boulevard means keeping up with the latest trends that are sweeping down the runways each season. However, sometimes it can be tricky to incorporate extravagant outfits into your every-day school wear. To save you the trouble, I’ve compiled my three favorite spring trends and several (easy) ways you can incorporate them into your new spring semester ensembles. I'll be posting the other two trends next Wednesday. Game On: Sport was a trending theme on the runways of Rag & Bone and Alexander Wang. From sleek track pants to mesh bombers, game day pieces are guaranteed to be spotted on stylish streets. Try striped primary colors or a sweater with elbow patches when it gets...
