Transitioning Trends

09/30/12 16:03 PM

by Lauren Adams Email: ladams@smu.edu   Transitioning from summer to fall is no easy task when you live somewhere as mercurial as Dallas, but by adding a few basics to tune up your wardrobe, you can make the switch a snap! Layering Comfy knits and patterned prints will help you get from A to B. Try this slouchy cardigan from ASOS for a grandpa-meets-grunge vibe, or pull on this cute animal print from Madewell to add a bit of eclectic prep to your step. Vests, long and short, and lightweight jackets are a must for when the temperature begins to drop. Try these cute layer-ables on for size -- this one by MINKPINK and this one from American Apparel will do the trick. And in an army jacket, like this number from ASOS, you’ll be prepared for any fall festivity....

How to rock jeans and a tee

09/25/12 10:09 AM

by Hillary Schmidt Email: hjschmidt@smu.edu Some people take this trend too casually. It is important to find a pair of jeans that fit you and your figure. Don’t just buy a pair because you’re friends have them and they look great- it is very unlikely that you have the exact same shape as them… everyone is different, but this is by no means a bad thing! Finding the right pair of jeans can have to do with the look you are going for. The word “jean” denotes a casual look, but you can certainly dress them up as well. For a more casual look, focus on jeans that will cover the shoe. Pair these with Keds or lace-less converses. Boyfriend jeans are another great option and can be worn with sandals. By adding heels and a bib necklace, you can make your look more formal. The...

Military chic, a unique trend

09/23/12 17:24 PM

by Hillary Schmidt Email: hjschmidt@smu.edu Although this trend has not been spotted around campus, it definitely deserves the consideration of adding it to your wardrobe. Designers such as Elizabeth and James and Marc Jacobs have incorporated this look in their fall lines, so you know it’s in style! Key pieces that will bring out the military side in you include military-inspired jackets with strong shoulders and brass buttons. Some of the most popular colors found in military style clothes are this season’s hottest shades: navy blue and hunter green. This way, you can rock two trends! If the feel of military clothing seems to be too masculine, pair a military-inspired jacket with a feminine dress or skirt- pale hues are the way to go with these added pieces. This outfit...

Hot Hair Trends

09/18/12 18:55 PM

by Brielle Kuhn Email: bkuhn@smu.edu This year’s fashion week proved that fashion goes far beyond clothes. All eyes were on the various hair trends for the upcoming fall 2012 season. One of the most popular and most wearable trends seen on this year’s runway is the perfectly smooth ponytail. Ponytails are so simple to style, and it doesn’t matter if they are high or low, just as long as they are super sleek. If you want to make sure that your flyaway hairs remain slicked throughout the day try spraying a clean toothbrush or small hard bristle brush with hairspray and brush it over the surface of your ponytail. Another easy to do trend for fall is the bang. Whether they’re soft side swept bangs or chunky center bangs, flaunt them! Don’t have bangs? Too scared to make the...

Get Embellished

09/16/12 21:12 PM

by Hillary Schmidt Email: hjschmidt@smu.edu Although the word denotes a more dressed-up feel, adding embellished pieces to your wardrobe can be done in more ways than just this one. Designers are taking simple, classic fall pieces and embellishing them with sequins, elaborate stitching and jewels. Knits, a fall staple, are more fun and trendy with an added embellishment on the elbow, while a pair of skinny pants in a decorative pattern adds oomph to an everyday outfit.  Wearing an embellished sweater with jeans and flats to class will show off your fashion-forward personality to your classmates. And to prove how much of a fashionista you really are, wear embellished clothing in this season’s trendiest colors like green and maroon. With formal season right around...

Football game fashion

09/11/12 17:29 PM

by Brielle Kuhn Email: bkuhn@smu.edu No white after Labor Day? Not according to the SMU Boulevard last Saturday. Students came out to support their fellow Mustangs in a white-out, and they looked stylish while doing so. SMU is host to the most fashion forward football games in Texas, and this year’s first football game was no exception. Saturday’s Boulevard was filled with white dresses of all fabric, lengths, and styles. Most popular fabric included lace and lightweight cotton. As for length, some students chose to showcase the popular high-low trend, while others chose a maxi-dress or the always popular mini-dress. Styles ranged from quarter-sleeved wrap dresses to strapless with ruffles. There was even a few cut out dresses— a perfect choice for the summer heat....

The many styles of arm parties

09/09/12 12:35 PM

by Hillary Schmidt and Lauren Adams Email: hjschmidt@smu.edu and ladams@smu.edu Whether colorful and crazy or simply metallic, chances are you’ve stacked up your wrists recently in accordance with fashion’s now-ubiquitous “arm party” craze.             Leandra Medine of The Man Repeller coined the term and started a revolution: No more “less is more!” When it comes to stackable jewelry, it’s the more the merrier. To join the party, invest in some staple pieces and swap out trendy items to stay current. Don’t be afraid to mix and match unlike items -- this is fashion, not a chemistry test. Looking to start up your collection? Here are a few items to add to your wish-list: * David Yurman -- an SMU staple. *...

FNO: In case you missed it

09/07/12 20:29 PM

by Hillary Schmidt Email: hjschmidt@smu.edu Fashion’s Night Out, otherwise known as “FNO,” was held last night at the Galleria, Highland Park Village and NorthPark Center. I was lucky enough to attend the one at NorthPark Center, which had endless lines to get in, that had three runway shows featuring stores like Neiman Marcus, H&M and bebe. All the trends I have become aware of through fashion magazines and seeing what kids on campus have been wearing were represented in each of the shows, such as the colors “50 shades of green” as one of the hosts referred to it as, maroon, and “blue as the new neutral,”There were also men models who showed off  men’s trends this season. I found it interesting that a trend for females this season is “women’s fashion inspried by...

Color Watch: Green

09/04/12 09:21 AM

by Hillary Schmidt Email: hjschmidt@smu.edu So green is in. Unfortunately I don’t think I own anything green, but I am definitely up for something new to add to my wardrobe, thanks to this season’s trend! Because we are in Dallas where the weather will still be warm for a while, incorporating color is the perfect way to compliment SMU’s great weather. As the fall rolls around, focus on darker tones, such as hunter. A green blazer will work nicely with jeans and flats, or even white jeans while summer is still transitioning into fall. Colored jeans and jeggings are definitely still in style, and easy to find. Pair these with a neutral top, or you can color block. Navy, black or maroon (another hot color this season) is your best bet. Another great reason to break out...
