10/30/12 10:14 AM
by Brielle Kuhn Email: bkuhn@smu.edu Do you ever find yourself wishing you could trade closets with one of your fashionable friends? SMU is a campus filled with stylish students, but some stand above the rest as the ultimate trendsetters. SMU Fashion Media Students want to celebrate these fashion leaders with their SMU “It Girl” contest. Reveal why your friend is a trendsetter in 250 words or less, along with a photo expressing his or her true style for a chance to winfirst dibs on a fabulous internship opportunity to work as a reporter on Noesis' style site, The Buzzthrill, along with a $100 Tootsies gift card for the trendsetter and the person who entered his or her name. The trendsetter will also be profiled on the redesigned SMU Fashion Media website, which...Garance Dore's SMU visit recap
10/28/12 10:55 AM
by Hillary Schmidt and Brielle Kuhn Email: hjschmidt@smu.edu, bkuhn@smu.edu Garance Dore is truly an inspiration. Her quirky humor and down to earth personality is completely humbling. With success encompassing her every endeavor, Dore has become one of the most inspirational woman in the fashion industry and her blog, Garance Dore, has become an international influence. Born in the south of France, Dore confesses that she never dreamed she would one day end up as a fashion blogger living in New York. As she began her career in illustrating, Dore quickly found herself drawn to fashion and this passion began to influence her drawings. The success of her drawings lead to the creation of her blog in 2006, and its popularity has grown to immense proportions. We were lucky enough...French fashion blogger Garance Doré comes to SMU
10/23/12 15:34 PM
by Hillary Schmidt Email: hjschmidt@smu.edu Doré, originally an illustrator, began blogging in June 2006 to showcase and communicate her love for all things beauty, fashion, lifestyle and travel. Her blog, titled after her own name, is light-hearted, trendy and eye opening. Doré’s personal encounters and experiences are shared to inform and advise the reader as she engages with them for a more personal experience. On Doré’s blog, you can find just about anything, from her very own illustrations, to videos of interviews and recaps of events, to a “diary” of her individual thoughts and expressions. Doré has certainly made a name for herself. She has been featured in some of the top high-fashion magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue (she appeared in a...Yosi Samra of the fold-up flats comes to Dallas
10/21/12 12:13 PM
by Hillary Schmidt Email: hjschmidt@smu.edu Yosi Samra, who makes the incredibly convenient fold up flats (that can fit anywhere), is coming to Dallas! On October 26th from 6 to 8p.m. Samra will be co-hosting a trunk show with Merge Boutique in Preston Hollow where he will present his newest line of flats for kids. Merge will also be selling his adult flats. These shoes come in a wide range of textures, such as leather, satin, patents and suede, and colors stretching from neutrals to neons- so you are guaranteed to find a pair that is perfect for you! They are a must-have for this season, and are referred to as the flip-flop of the fall. Fortunately for a college budget, Samra’s fold-up flats are affordable, ranging from $66 to $88. These versatile flats...iFashion: all the best fashion apps
10/16/12 17:41 PM
by Hillary Schmidt Email: hjschmidt@smu.edu For all you iPhone and iPad lovers, fashion magazines and all other things fashion are becoming more easily accessible! iPhones and iPads are beginning to offer apps so you can keep up with the latest in fashion right at your fingertips. One of my favorites is the “Vogue Stylist,” which comes out with new trends for each month. It is very to the point, making it super easy to see what’s in style at every moment. It gives you the option to “get the look,” which brings you to outfit options that are trend-friendly. You can also read a short blurb that explains why Vogue fashion editors are loving these trends. “Vogue Wish List” is another app offered by Vogue that allows you to add items to your own wish list and keeps them all...Boot Scootin' into Fall
10/09/12 17:44 PM
by Hillary Schmidt Email: hjschmidt@smu.edu So the temperature in Dallas has officially began to drop. Girls all over campus are pulling out their boots- it’s time to stay warm, and these in-season styles will be sure to keep you- and your feet- covered! First off, there are a few “rules” when it comes to finding the right pair and creating the perfect look. If your boots cover your calves, pick a pair that is fitted around your calf, but is not so tight that less than a half-inch of space exists between the boot and your leg. Otherwise, ensure the sizing is appropriate for your foot. If any heel is involved, make sure it’s a comfortable height. Always walk around in them before you buy! In general, pair boots with leggings or jeggings- these will eliminate any...Hair 101- Mastering waves and the sleek ponytail
10/08/12 13:06 PM
by Hillary Schmidt Email: hjschmidt@smu.edu Curly hair? Straight hair? Somewhere in between? It’s easy to get used to one style and develop a fear of doing something spontaneous. Two of my favorites that don’t require you going too far out of your comfort zone are the wave and the sleek ponytail. They’re easy to create, look natural and work for almost any occasion. Straight hair is best when it comes to making waves- even if you don’t have naturally straight hair, you can always straighten it before hand. In order to create the perfect wavy look, start off with applying a volumizing mousse (if you’re hair is thin, this style will make your hair look like it’s full of body). Dry your hair by running a towel through it while scrunching it as you go....Loving Leather
10/02/12 16:13 PM
by Hillary Schmidt Email: hjschmidt@smu.edu Faux leather has made its debut into the fashion world- it's no longer just for motorcyclists. Designers like Rachel Zoe and Rebecca Taylor introduced this look at New York Fashion Week and made it clear that this trend isn't temporary- you can wear it all the way through spring. So it's definitely worth investing in! This look is perfect for fall because it looks best in dark colors, typically black. Skirts, tops (a very select few styles), jackets and satchels are the best items to wear in leather. Leather jackets are probably the first piece that comes to mind when you think of wearing leather. Pair it with jeans and ankle boots for an edgier look, or wear it with a dress. A maxi is one of the most stylish ways to rock...
