Trying a new trend
11/27/12 10:49 AM
by Hillary Schmidt, hjschmidt@smu.edu You can be extremely fashion forward and read every page of every fashion magazine, but the trends you find are most likely not all for you. When it comes to trying a new trend, there are a few things to keep in mind. First of all, if you come across something that seems a bit out of your comfort zone, but you can see yourself wearing it- try it! It’s easy to get nervous around something that you have never tried before, but you’re style will forever be the same if you never do something spontaneous. Secondly, be realistic. Often what you see on the runway or in magazines is highly exaggerated in terms of what you would wear. Models are wonderful for inspiration, but don’t take their looks literally. Tone them town to your own level,...Quick rundown of new trends

by Hillary Schmidt, hjschmidt@smu.edu There are two new trends that designers have introduced that are definitely worth knowing about. Here is a quick rundown of what they are, and what to wear. 1. Velvet. Ok, so obviously we have heard about velvet as a hot trend in the past, but it is one of those timeless fabrics that you’re sure to re-wear winter after winter. It’s definitely worth it to invest in a few pieces. When it comes to this trend, focus on deep, vivid colors. To spice up this look, sport quilted- yes, you read that right… this pattern isn’t just for bedspreads- velvet jackets to keep warm and stay stylish at the same time. Designers have expanded their lines that were filled with velvet blazers all the way to velvet skinny pants, heels and bags. A...Spritz It On

by Hillary Schmidt, hjschmidt@smu.edu A girl should never leave the house without a spritz (or few) of her favorite perfume. Deodorant just doesn’t cut it, having a signature smell is what it’s all about. The obvious places to spray are on the neck and wrists. But, to keep the smell lasting longer, be sure to apply on your “pulse points.” These are the locations where blood vessels are near the skin’s surface- these areas give off more heat, and as heat emits from these points, the fragrances comes along with it. So- in addition to your inner wrist, the inside of your elbow, behind your ears, and yes- even behind you knees- are the way to go. And then, for that final touch, spray a few feet in front of your body, then walk immediately through it. Note that...Bundle Up

by Hillary Schmidt, hjschmidt@smu.edu Thanksgiving is upon us, and before you know it, winter will be too- it’s time to rummage through your closet and pull out your coats if you haven’t yet! Don’t let a jacket bog down your ensemble… even though it conceals your outfit, you can still show off your sense of style by sporting a trendy, in-season coat. Lucky for you, designers have incorporated the hottest trends into their jackets. So, if you’re sick of the basic pea coats and puffer jackets, check out these ideas to look trendy and stay warm! Try this J.Crew “cocoon” jacket, This Topshop peplum jacket, This Rag & Bone military-inspired parka, This blazer-inspired jacket from Lot78, Or this alice + olivia fur-trimmed jacket. And, although...Feelin Like a Stud
11/13/12 11:03 AM
by Brielle Kuhn, bkuhn@smu.edu Whether they’re on shoes, jackets, clutches, or jewelry, studs are making a huge impact on the fashion world. Studs have been showcased all over the runway, with their most recent appearance in the Fendi Spring 2013 show. But studs are most proudly worn by the trendsetters on the street. “Street style” is a new blogging obsession and it is paving the way for many newfound trendsetters. Studs have become one of the most beloved accessories of these street style mavens. Studs are the perfect way to toughen up a girly outfit or add an unexpected element to a preppy ensemble. Try a studded bag with a feminine dress to create the perfect balance. Or, if you are really brave, add studs to your nails! Yes, I said nails. Celebrities such as...Geoffrey Henning introduces new line
11/11/12 16:14 PM
by Hillary Schmidt, hjschmidt@smu.edu With the new James Bond movie in mind, Director of Women’s Design for JCPenny, Geoffrey Henning, introduced his new line at The Fashionistas Runway Series Thursday night. The venue was all white with a very modern appeal- waiters walked around with drinks, and every attendee was clad in high-fashion attire. Definitely inspiring! A James Bond movie was projected onto the walls to enhance the feel of the “James Bond girl-“ known for her upmost beauty and style. While the models strutted down the runway to James-Bond-themed music, they showcased Henning’s use of neons, blacks and whites, neutrals, color blocking, and camo pattern- to name a few. Quite the variety, huh? The heels were studded, while the flats were simple....Rocking the 'Stache

by Hillary Schmidt, hjschmidt@smu.edu The mustache-trend has taken the fashion world by storm- by what seems to have been over night. This craze was introduced by the “hipsters,” but it has certainly caught on outside of this subculture. Images of the mustache are being printed on t-shirts, cups, accessories, iPhone cases… you name it. The mustache symbol typically appears as a black manicured handlebar- a style that was first seen in the 18th century on European soldiers during World War I. The most popular look is the strictly shaped mustache printed on a loose fitting tee. Ironically enough, it is seen mostly on girls. So if you’re looking for a way to incorporate a tomboy feel into your wardrobe, this is a trendy and fun way to do so. You certainly don’t have to...Totally Baroque
11/05/12 11:31 AM
by Lauren Adams, ladams@smu.edu This season, the highly-detailed, dramatic grandeur of 17th century baroque fashion is back by popular demand. Baroque styles are topping the charts this fall as antique opulence bypasses modern minimalism for a luxurious look back at fashion’s most extravagant era. Here are a few suggestions for going baroque without ba-reaking the bank: Whether you ornament yourself with a bejeweled belt, this heavenly headpiece, or these whimsical wedges, Opt for luxurious texture, like this ASOS dress, or this Tobi dress, Pair a fun top like this one from Free People or patterned pants with a modern staple for a trendy look that’s not head-to-toe, Add a sarcastic sweater or a brocade blazer for a bit of baroque...
