Sneak Peek: Tomorrow's Big Story
3/30/10 6:50 PM
Today, a few sparse details. I don't want to spoil the awesomeness. 1. Former Managing Editor Steve Thompson 2. Investigative Series 3. Tomorrow's Issue I'm stoked to announce that tomorrow we'll be kicking off a series of investigative stories which center around SMU. The first is written by Thompson, a (if I do say so) great writer who really should be writing more for us (the slacker says he doesn't have time, what with his Dallas Morning News job, class and all that. Do I believe that he has a "busy schedule"? Not really. I think he just knows we'll put him on the Student Senate beat, which he doesn't want to do). I really don't want to give anything else away, so I'll say that it's going to be amazing. Here's hoping it makes an impression. Don't forget to pick...Behind the Scenes: DC Endorsements

Each spring, it has been tradition for the Editorial Board to endorse candidates in the Student Body Officer elections. This is the Student Body President, Vice President and Secretary. But how do we do it? Let me explain the process. First, we get a list of candidates from Student Senate and get them to sign up for an interview time. We grant the same amount of time to everyone: 15 minutes. During this time, we listen to their platforms and ideas. Then we asked questions. Some regulars: Why should we vote for you rather than one of the other candidates? What past legislation have you authored? What organizations are you a part of? Which ones will you continue with if you get elected? How did you vote when Senate was...Return of the Cheat Sheet

It was my original intention to post these every Friday. But then a record-setting snowfall kind of disrupted things. Indeed, the snow was perhaps the biggest story at SMU this week. Classes were cancelled, snowfights erupted, and students were building snowmen on the Main Quad that were around five feet tall. As I write this, there's still remnants of snow on the ground. The Boulevard is littered with fallen branches (which are being picked up by several workers). No snowmen remain intact, although I did snap a photo of what I'm dubbing "The Last Snowman." See accompanying photo gallery of some shots I took today. 2/5/10 11:32 PM
Need to catch up on your SMU news? Starting this week, I’ll be culling important news articles about SMU on a weekly basis. Call it a cheat sheet, since it’s great for those of you who don’t have a Google Alert on your phone for SMU (and actually, I don’t recommend getting one--it can get annoying at times). What's in the news? Two stories were highly publicized: SMU's fundraising for the Haiti earthquake relief efforts and National Signing Day. The numbers are approximately "in the thousands" and "16." If you don't have a health insurance waiver (can be obtained through access.smu.edu), be prepared to pay for SMU's mandatory health insurance. Finally, universities in Texas saw a drop in donations--except SMU, since we're in the middle of the...Sneak Peek

One thing I enjoy about working in a newsroom: you never know what's going to happen.
Take today: we had an impromptu photo shoot outside Hughes-Trigg for one of tomorrow's stories about ticket scalping.
The model is our own Layout Editor Josh Parr. I know you can't tell from the photos (because it was dark and my cell phone camera is horrible), but he's holding a cardboard sign (fashioned shortly before the shoot!) that says "Need Tickets."
Taking the photo is our own Associate News Editor Sarah Pottharst.
