Questions for Conservatives

Abstract:
Professor Abraham's article in our campus's paper was disturbing. He spoke the same language as the ignorant Republicans who blindly follow President Bush.

While the nation has been led into a terrible war, some are being led to believe the Bush Institute stands for academic diversity....

First, let's remember that Democrats voted for this war too. Also, Democrats in the Senate were calling for a troops surge months before Bush actually announced it. Then, they changed their minds, playing politics with our soldiers. Hillary said she wants a troop surge in Afghanistan. So, you should be careful who you point your finger at.

This world has always been a dangerous place. Remember 9/11? Remember USS Cole? Remember the African Embassies? Fortunately, under President Bush we have experienced the longest period without a domestic terrorist attack in recent history.

To mention the Taliban and Saddam is ridiculous. That would be like comparing the Cold War and Russia to now. "Well, Republicans were against Russia in the 80s, all of a sudden Bush is buddies with Putin." Different Presidents, different policies, different times.

I don't think we have created a new generation of terrorist. We have EXPOSED a new generation. And Bin Laden is currently hiding in a cave. I'm cautious to predict what the state of the world and America would be if we had stayed out of Iraq and Afghanistan and allowed Bin Laden and his terrorist regime to roam freely.

Also, don't for Resolution 1441 in the UN. Sadam continually refused to allow UN Weapons Inspectors access to his nuclear facilities. We used every diplomatic approah possible. After these options were exhausted, we took action, ended the reign of a cruel dictator who was found guilty of genocide and brought DEMOCRACY to Iraq. Not bad.

As for soldiers and their families. Let's not forget this is a VOLUNTEER Army. You ask a soldier in Iraq if it's worth them being there, and the majority say they are glad to be fighting for freedom. Unfortunately, you base your opinion on the Cindy Sheehan's of the world...a small, but vocal, minority.

The most recent poll of soldiers, appearing in the military times shows 38% of soldiers in favor of escalating this war. The national poll, released yesterday, said that the new democratic congress was not doing ENOUGH to put an end to the war, to the tune of 64%. Is that a small but vocal minority? It is you who is in the minority.

Criticism of the war in Iraq is deserved. How do you think the Iraqis feel about the "democracy" that brough them a civil war? I am sure they appreciated that, along with the thousands of them who have since been killed since the invasion.

Also in the news yesterday, our escalation soldiers will have to share equipment with troops already there. So, who is it that supports the troops again? Those that want to throw them in the middle of a civil war with no direction, ill equipped, or those that want to bring them home?

Finally, your claim that we exhausted all diplomatic options before the invasion is untrue. Hans Blix had to leave Iraq just before the invasion to avoid being "shocked and awed." If he had been given the time to proceed, perhaps he would have found out what we learned the hard way...there was NO nucleur program.

Yes, some democrats voted to authorize force in Iraq, some did not. Those that did not were correct, and those that did have all in some way admitted that they were wrong to do so or said they would not have done it again. Others, including yourself, have held on tightly to your misguided beliefs. How many more troops will be killed before Bush and his gang admit to a mistake? It is reprehensible that the soldiers who will be killed from here forward are dying for one man's political legacy/face saving/stubborn misreading of reality.

I want to thank everyone that has just e-mailed me in support!

I wrote this in between classes after reading an article by the mentioned Professor. He, like so many others, uses words without meaning- and in a moment of rage I submitted this hasty article. My only hope is that students learn the facts and act on intelligence, that my peers can see that the phrase "Protecting our Freedom" has a real meaning, and this meaning lies in guarding the freedoms we all have, NOT through war and domestic spying.
