Bennett fired mid-season; will coach final four games

Abstract:
Phil Bennett was fired Sunday as head coach of the SMU football team, but will stay on to coach the remaining four games this season. The decision came after a 29-23 loss at Tulsa that dropped the Mustangs to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in conference play and officially eliminated the team from bowl contention....

Is there any chance that SMU is already talking to Texas A&M soon-to-be-fired Coach Dennis Franchione? Would he be the right fit for the Mustangs given his background with TCU, DFW recruiting and relationships with the Dallas-area media?

Sad day for Bennett, and SMU. Although this program has produced student athletes (emphasis- student) with one of the highest overall GPA's and graduation success rates in CUSA, not to mention NCAA, the light shines only on the programs success/failure on the field. It will be difficult for SMU to attract the caliber coach they desire, at the same salary level. People need to start attending games, win or lose. It means supporting and being part of the TEAM of SMU. No great player, let alone coach, wants to come perform to a half empty stadium of quiet, disinterested people. Just watch some college ball on TV- stadiums full, people excited, players trying their hardest to win to the deafening roar of their peers and fans. Thats where the good recruits and coaches want to go. Where they're APPRECIATED.
Here at SMU, the emphasis seems to be on having a good time on the "boulevard", less on what happens on the field and in the stands. Observers are left with an impression of this schools apathy towards the program and disbelief in the teams ability to do any better. If that's the best the supposed supporters can do, then the program Bennett developed was a deal- good luck finding anyone who can acheive any more.
By the way, NOW would be a good time to let your team know you appreciate the effort they've made, even though it fell short of expectations. No one likes to lose, but to lose to peers who display an attitude of callous arrogance is a bitter pill indeed. GO to the final games of this season, CHEER for the team. You might even enjoy yourselves. PONY UP!
