How Gerald J. Ford's private plane, three flights in 36 hours and a not-so-secret meeting have SMU as close as possible to finding a new football coach

Abstract:
THE TARGET

Navy head coach Paul Johnson appears to the No. 1 candidate for SMU.

The coach is 45-29 in six seasons at the Naval Academy and has led the Midshipmen to five straight bowls.

Johnson is capable of turning a program around. Navy was 1-20 in the two seasons before he arrived....

I certainly hope PJ decides to stay at Navy ... however, that said, he will be a success whereever he goes and any school lucky enough to get him should thank the powers that be. He is -in addition to being a football genius- one hell of a human being ! GO NAVY !

1) If Loyd was closed starting at 5:30 p.m. why did you not check it out until 7:45 p.m.? And of course there's going to be no one there at 9:30 at night.
2) The Stadium Club can be seen from the Airline side, so with a pair of binoculars you could have seen directly into all levels.
3) If there really was a maintenance reason for the entire stadium to be closed all the lights would have been on, so that proves nothing.
4) Do we really care all so much who the next coach that we need to be stalking Love Field and the stadium? Student turn out at the games is HORRID, clearly they don't care about the football program.
5) I would be demanding to know why the A-LEC was closed and moved to a different location the week before finals. Pushing that might get you an answer.

From stories from The Daily Campus and the Dallas morning News, it is ashame that a select few boosters are involved in hiring of the new football coach, especially when there is no offical search committee. Also, boosters have raised between $10 and $12 million for a new coach? Funny, I have been a member of the Mustang Club for 30 plus years and no one approached me about donating money for a new coach. What is also funny is that no one approached me for donating money to the Crum basketball center and the expanded all sports center behind Moody especially after the Morning News reported that the school was short on donated money to build the buildings. My gut feeling tells me two things about the last few years of Jim Copelands athletic department and the first 1-1/2 years of Jim Orsini's athletic department.
First, it appears a few of the mighty rich and/or the mighty powerful are running the show or being extremely catered to which could have an affect why there are no middle America people are knocking down SMU'S front door to buy football and basketball tickets.
Second, it also appears that SMU could be heading down the path of another cheating scandal as long as these few boosters are so deeply involved in the hiring process outside of an search committee.
