Jones has 72 hours says SMU

Abstract:
72 hours. That's how long SMU is willing to wait for Hawaii coach June Jones to make a decision on whether he wants to come to the Hilltop according to a source involved with the search for SMU. SMU set the timeline Wednesday morning to avoid a situation similar to what happened with now-Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson....

Why do we 1) give so much money to a head coach and not to the professors who educate our students, which is what college is for right?

and 2)care if we get a big name coach anyway? I mean, Yes, I've heard how texas is all about football, but some people just don't care. Just so you know, there are people out there who don't like football.

IT SOUNDS LIKE WE HAVE OURSELF A HATER! Our program shouldn't have to suffer anymore just because you and some others don't care for the sport of football. Could this be part of the reason student participation is so few at football games due to a lack of support from the student body? You answered your first question in your second comment - Texas is all about football so yes they are going to spend money (esp. SMU) to get a coach. Have you not noticed how badly our football program has suffered throughout the years? 2008 will bring a new beginning for SMU football and a new coach, but it is going to cost a good penny.

Pony UP!

Give me a break. Success in one of the "money" sports of Football and Basketball is one of the best ways to build a university's name in the public eye and is a great way to add additional funds to the university in other areas. Do you realize how many positive gains that school west of us on I-30 has had over the past 10 years, due largely in part to the funds that its success on the football field has passed along to it.

Not only that, but too many people at SMU think like you (yes, I'm an alumnus - 2003)...bratty know-it alls that would be showing up and saying the total opposite if we had a winning tradition over the past few years. Nothing else brings alumni back to campus like football, and nothing builds pride in a university like athletic sucess - I know you academic whiners don't want to believe that, but it's true.

The coach is being paid out of donations from boosters and alumni that understand and want to see success in all areas of our university, not only academics. SMU is a top-tier academic university with solid support from the administration and the alumni.

Quit whining and PONY UP.

ok, so you dont care about football. then take your opinions elsewhere, instead of upsetting those of us who do care about it. this is a football news story so get over it.

Hiring a "big name" coach is a crucial step in putting SMU's name back on the map. For the past twenty years, SMU has been "the team who received the death penalty," and being a student I am growing tired of being referred to that name. Hiring a big name coach will create excitement not only at the school itself, but with the alumni, boosters and the greater Dallas area. It shows that AD Orsini is committed to bringing a winning tradition to SMU.
With all of that said, there is no way June Jones will be the next coach at SMU. He is simply using this as a way to leverage his current deal at Hawaii. Why would he come to SMU? He's already turned one program around, and his it in the top 25, why would he want to do that again when we is already a God at one school.

Right or wrong, athletics are the most prominent form of advertising for a university, making it an imperitive decision to get a coach that bring a dragging team back up to par. Unfortunately no one tunes in on Saturday to see a breakdown of the works of Shakespeare--they want good football, and good football brings respect to a university. Besides, SMU HAS the money, it's not being taken from the hands of the professors.

Seriously, people who are going to whine about giving our next coach a decent amount of money need to step back and think about the huge endowment SMU has, and be thankful for the academic donations we have received. Without a Division I Athletic Department, nobody would want to come to SMU. This guy is a proven winner in a conference similar to Conference-USA and can build SMU into a winning program. If you have a problem with us paying a few million dollars to bring in a good coaching staff, then why don't you pony up for a donation to an academic department?

As I'm reading the different comments about winning and establishing a tradition; I think this is hilarious considering one of the few programs at SMU with a national caliber team was cut. Maybe the booster club and alumna's can spend a few dollars on reestablishing the mens XC/Track & Field powerhouse which was nationally known; I can't say that about the football team though. You cut the wrong program Mr. Orsini.
