I regret that Provost Tunks sees the Faculty Senate's ongoing discussion of the relationship between the proposed Bush Institute and SMU as a "continuing string of negatives." Since Provost Tunks has not shared with the Senate the details of that relationship, it is the responsibility of the Senate to propose a structure we find compatible with SMU's mission. The resolution that failed so narrowly merely stated that the Bush Institute should either join SMU or remain separate: hardly a negative message. It is unfortunate that engagement by the faculty in SMU's business should be seen as destructive. I do hope that the Bush Foundation will find the idea of working with a active faculty to be a positive aspect of having the Presidential Library on campus.
