Methodist petition grows as YCT launches own drive

Abstract:
The Methodist ministers' petition to stop SMU from getting the George W. Bush library hit a milestone on the same day SMU's Young Conservatives announced plans to start a petition of their own.

I honestly believe these petitions against the Bush library being at SMU are ridiculous. I understand their concern since Bush is a controversial president; but nonetheless, it is an honor to have him place his library at our school. It will provide additional resources for the students and community to further their education and gain knowledge. To turn down the opportunity to add a library to a college campus is ironic to say the least. Besides for the church worried so much about their association, SMU is no longer affiliated with the Methodist church to my knowledge.

If you see the petition in question, you will see several familiar names. Some of them have the buidlings you walk in every day named after them. Are the people who build this great university being "ridiculous" in not wanting their university associated with this administration? Part of the library will be the think tank, whose mission will be to further the merits of Bush's policies. Essentially, they are going to fit facts around an agenda. This is meritless scholarship, and should not be a part of SMU.

"It is the opinion of our group that the opponents of this library have waged war on this proposal primarily because of their opposition to the President's policies," said SMU chapter executive director Andy Hemming.

Well, yeah! They've said that over, and over, and over. It's not like they're doing it because they don't like the color of the ties he wears. Good one!

The fact that YCT, an organization that has campaigned for Christianity to be in every edifice of American life, is opposing the Methodist Church truly shows the hypocrisy of the far right.
