SMU athletics deficit $56.7 million over four years

Abstract:
Over the past four years, the SMU athletic department has lost $56.7 million.

The department is projected to lose $16.8 million in 2008 and $16.3 million in 2009.

If those projections hold up, the SMU athletic department will have lost almost $90 million over six years, figures far larger than previously published estimates....

Maybe if it wasn't for worsening tailgates, an overzealous police force, and terrible win loss records, people would go to some games. Look at Ole Miss....they have a fantastic tailgate, relaxed policies, have a terrible win loss record, yet still have thousands upon thousands attend every game dressed to the nines. Maybe we could also come up with a better slogan/logo than "Pony Up". Athletic department has a long way to go...

They REALLY need to work on the yellow jacket security folks. They have a military type attitude and you aren't going to keep fans that way. It is completely ridiculous. They have to let people go in/out. They paid tickets, they can do what they want.

double digit deficit compared to the median deficits of single digits? it is not surprising. First, SMU's athletic department except for the Forrest Gregg years since the firing of Fry after the 72 season, is a program whose only mission is to raise money for the athletic department and for the school as a whole and selling tickets second. They are always concerned of how much someone gave before they will sale you season tickets with the best seat in the 3/4 empty Ford stadium. This year, for 2008 football season, if one does not give x number of dollars per seat in addition to the cost of the ticket, then one could end up in the end zone or corner seat. It is wiered since they are acting like there is more demand than supply for football tickets.
Also, it does not take a genius to figure out that they can sell more tickets with honey than with vinegar. Meaning, there are more crowds when SMU plays Texas Tech and Oklahoma State than when they play Arkansas State, UNT, Texas State(this year) and any Conf-USA school.
in other words, quit thinking, acting and catering like a bunch of spoiled rich folks and start behaving like middle America.
