
First-year student Jordan Crist died from acute alcohol poisoning according to a report released today by the Dallas County Medical Examiner. Crist had a blood alcohol level of .4 - five times the legal limit. (29) comments

It will be at least three weeks until friends and family of first-year student Jordan Crist know how he died. Crist was found unresponsive Wednesday morning in a dorm room on the third floor of Perkins Hall. SMU's Human Rights Education Program is now a reality. Dr. Rick Halperin is happy to proclaim that, "It's not a theory anymore, its here." Human Rights will officially become a minor degree program at SMU by the fall semester. Halperin, the director of SMU's Human Rights Education Program, has been working on this since July 1 of last year when Dedman College received a sizeable gift from the Embrey family for the program. Students and other members of the Dallas community gathered in the McFarlin Auditorium as bands Phantom Planet and Motion City Soundtrack played during the annual Code Red Concert on Tuesday at 8 p.m. "We tried to mix it up this year," said Jordan McCarter, the advisor to SMU's Program Council. The 94th Student Senate Officers were inaugurated in the Hughes-Trigg Commons on Tuesday afternoon. University President R. Gerald Turner was there with opening remarks. He spoke of how hard the 93rd Student Senate worked efforts. He feels they accomplished many goals throughout the year and with much to come in the future, he does not know what to expect. Kidi Amanuel stands out in her biology class. She is the only black student in her class, which isn't unusual for SMU. "Personally, I don't let things like that really affect me, other than noticing the fact, so I don't dwell on it much," Amanuel said. "But maybe it shows that I'm getting used to being a minority. Tuesday was the postmark deposit deadline for the incoming class of 2011. The long recruiting season has ended, and Southern Methodist University is busy preparing to welcome the new first-years to the Hilltop. Channing Cass transferred to SMU in the fall of 2006 from the University of Oklahoma. A senior English major, Cass always considered herself a strong writer and reader until enrolling in Professor Beth Newman's poetry class. Cass said that Newman returned the class' first writing assignment with a note attached to her paper calling her a poor writer who should never have made it so far as an English major. (2) comments
SMU graduate Ashley Rich was weeks away from walking down the aisle when she quickly and quietly called off her six-month engagement to a man she had known since the third grade. SMU first-year David Speedlin said he has seen friends do community service simply to put it on a resume for graduate school. He has also witnessed fraternity members backstabbing their own brothers to benefit themselves.
