In front of blinking news cameras, scribbling reporters and anxious members of the SMU community, President R. Gerald Turner officially announced a $10.1 million gift to the School of Engineering Thursday morning. The gift, from the W.W. Caruth Jr. Foundation through the nonprofit Communities Foundation of Texas, is the largest in the engineering school's history. (0) comments

Law enforcement is said to exist to serve and protect the people. A recent incident at the University of Florida involving student Andrew Meyer, who was dragged out of a campus forum for U.S. Senator John Kerry, has left students, faculty and police officials at SMU defending their positions in the latest campus clash of free speech rights and the alleged use of excessive force by law enforcement. Thursday night, Alpha Chi Omega held its first "Accessorize with Alpha Chi" event in the Hughes-Trigg Ballroom supported by local vendors and Neiman Marcus. All proceeds will go toward the Genesis Women's Shelter. Free makeovers with 15 artists from Neiman's, as well as support from local vendors Francesca's, Mine, A Boutique and The Impeccable Pig were offered. (0) comments

Members of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority sell popsicles Thursday to help raise funds as a part of the Dollars for Darfur campaign. Greek organizations have been selling items all week to raise money for the cause. (0) comments

The SMU Health Center took part in advertising free depression screenings as part of National Depression Screening Day on Thursday. The day is an annual event held each October on the Thursday of Mental Illness Awareness Week. During this time, doctors and clinicians volunteer time to offer free health and educational screenings at malls, hospitals, offices and local clinics. (0) comments
