Texas Legislature mulls bill to allow concealed handguns on college campuses

Senior Andrew Shaw sits in class reminiscing about a simpler time. His biggest concern used to be whether or not the person sitting next to him decided to shower that day. Now his worry is what caliber of gun his neighbor might be concealing.

"That scares the hell out of me," Shaw said. His fears come from a bill currently being debated in the Texas Legislature. The bill would allow those able to legally obtain a concealed weapon permit to carry their weapons on college campuses, which is currently unlawful. (2) comments

Students gather Thursday night on campus to  remember Jessica Chané Waldron

Jessica Chane Waldron will be remembered by friends and family today at 10 a.m. at the Saint Luke United Methodist Church. The family is asking friends and family to send donations to their favorite charity in lieu of flowers. Waldron was shot on Sunday morning outside 2026 Ultra Lounge. (1) comment

Democracy Matters sponsored an event Wednesday night entitled, "Student Lobbyist Training" with Andy Wilson from the Austin, Texas office of Public Citizen. Democracy Matters is a campus organization focused on campaign finance reform and fair elections. Last semester they put on several events centered on the presidential election, but this semester they are shifting their focus back to their mission statement and particularly on their Fair Elections Now Act action campaign. The Multicultural Greek Council, with the help of the Hispanic and Asian fraternities underneath it, presented their first ever "Learn How to Make Sushi Night" as a part of Asian Council's CelebrASIAN on Thursday, April 2. Sushi Night attracted more than 120 participants to the Varsity of the Hughes Trigg Student Center, where they were treated to a special show of Japanese culture and some homemade sushi. Sara was no different from any other SMU freshman who wanted to enjoy college life. She rushed a sorority her freshman year. She made many friends and loved Dallas. Jack was someone she saw on campus and knew through mutual friends. By her sophomore year, Sara had settled in, enjoying life at SMU. (0) comments

Every day, students gather outside at the tanning pool of the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports, basking in beautiful weather. Men and women occasionally start up a game of beach volleyball, and some even choose to study as they soak up the sun's rays. This Saturday, however, students can experience the luxuries of the Dedman outdoor facilities in a new way by participating in the Brother's Under Christ Island Party. (0) comments
