Avoid holiday weight gain

Has Thanksgiving’s hefty meal left you feeling as round as Santa Claus? Home-cooked meals, catching up over drinks with old friends, a Thanksgiving dinner and an abundance of hors d’oeuvres can take a big toll on your waist line in just a short time.

This past week’s damage could be just the beginning of the 5 to 7 pounds the average American gains throughout the holiday season. Get a firm grasp on your diet and nutrition now, before it becomes a serious problem.

Here’s how:1)First, get in the mind set: Sign up for yoga classes. Many local yoga studios offer great startup deals, such as 10 days for 10 dollars, offered at Sunstone Yoga. According to recent releases by both Women’s Health magazine and Reader’s Digest, yoga is the only exercise proven to put you in the mindset to practice a healthy lifestyle and eat right. Starting your morning with a yoga class will leave you making better meal choices all day long!

2) Take a multi-vitamin: This will ensure that you get the required amount of vitamins essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Just one vitamin a day can give you more energy, thus eliminating the daily Red-Bull run.

3) Take a mini vacation and chill out in salt water. Yes, you heard us. Not just your everyday table salt, but Epsom Salt, which can be purchased at nearby CVS, contains magnesium and sulfate offering many health benefits. Epsom Salt has been proven to flush toxins, ease stress and improve nutrient absorption among many other things, according to epsomsaltcouncil.org. Plus, thirty minutes relaxing in the tub could be just what you need to relax your mind before finals.

4) Avoid processed foods, such as Lean Cuisines. Instead, cook with olive oil, garlic and lemon. These natural herbal anti-bacterials will remove toxins built up in your stomach, according to Dr. Alejandro Junger, creator of the “Clean” diet. Junger’s diet is practiced and sworn by stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow.

5) Tone up. The treadmill is great, but implementing weight training into your routine will have you feeling better in no time. Putting on a little muscle will have you burning more calories all day long, even while you’re asleep. For every pound of muscle you add, your body will burn 50 more calories each day.
