Code Red Concert shut down by police

Program Council's Code Red Concert featuring Big Boi and Girl Talk ended early Thursday night.

Twenty to 30 minutes into Big Boi's performance, University Park Police arrived at Doak Walker Plaza. According to Brooke Morin, Program Council Concerts Chair, UP had received 13 phone calls complaining about noise.

In preparation for the event, Program Council placed notices on the doors of residences adjacent to the Doak Walker Plaza, however, Morin said the complaints were coming from Preston Road and Mockingbird Lane.

When University Park Police arrived, they were originally going to close down the show early and have PC turn down the music.

After receiving more complaints, UP police decided to close down the event altogether.

"There was no way we would have brought these people out if we knew this was going to happen," said Morin.

According to Bobby Martinez, head of security for the event, approximately 1,300 members of the SMU community came out to the event.

"I'm happy with the turn out, in my four years, our campus never gets excited about anything, but people were talking about this weeks in advance," said Morin.

Well, if you read UP's city ordinances, their noise rules are in effect all the time. Not just at night. So, your point is mute.

There's no more money left to put on another concert. Not to mention it takes months of planning and there are only 3 weeks left of school.

First off the majority of people who showed up were not SMU students. So way to have zero control over maybe the coolest thing to come to SMU in a long long time. Just another big F up by SMU. With all the millions they hoard away it would be nice to see them actually step up and make this up to the student body with another event of this magnitude.

So when are we getting the rest of our concert? Or is that it?

There were a variety of places that such an event could have been held and that space was probably not the best, obviously.

The execution of this event was a long shot for SMU anyways. One would expect such a concert to be pulled off by A&M or UT or possibly UNT. SMU does not have the whit and resources to do so as we all witnessed last night.

The SMU name could be cleared by a rescheduling of the event in a more proper local. I doubt the will power is there to do so.

"I'm happy with the turn out, in my four years, our campus never gets excited about anything, but people were talking about this weeks in advance," said Morin.

And they'll never get excited for anything again. Typical of SMU, let the students get excited about something and then ruin it. Tailgating on the Boulevard, Fraternities, a normal college experience.... etc.

It would have been nice if this article included the events that occured after the concert was shut down. Like the chanting of F*** SMU by a large population of the student body. Not to mention the throwing of bottles at security and police . It's no wonder the school never lets us do anything cool like this. Most of us obviously can't handle it.

leah O'neil.....why so angry? they tried. I'll take that any day. And great job on stereotyping an entire community...I hope you're intelligent enough to see the hypocrisy.

They did their best and what we got was a privilege. Big Boi put on an incredible performance for the time he had, and I applaud the efforts of everyone involved in bringing this event to the community.

I applaud the effort on the part of the people who booked Big Boi and Girl Talk at SMU. It was really great to FINALLY have something cool coming to SMU. I think everyone knows the UP police is completely inadequate and worthless - the best thing about that whole institution is you get Bubba's when you go to jail for the night. And Big Boi was great; I still had an awesome time at the show. It's just too bad stuffy wrinkled old people in snobby neighborhoods can't take the heat.

Major fail. If you want to hold a Girl Talk show ask the University of Texas.

Wow. Good work planning that one. Nobody stopped to consider noise violations in an uptight neighborhood filled with people who think they're omnipotent because they have a little cash, & therefore a little power to control their bubble. No one thought through the possibility of black rappers performing in an all white area where the perfectly sheltered children might have their narrow world view "tainted". Socioeconomic status aside, no one thought maybe Thursday night might not be the best night to have a loud, outdoor concert in a residential neighborhood?
We talked about how impressed we were that you were able to get the permits to hold such an event on a weeknight. We were curious how late HP & UP had given you permission to hold the event. Apparently that detail was missed. What a huge disappointment.
major. planning. fail.
