Extended dining hall hours may be ending

What the Student Senate worked to give, the university may take away.

Student Senate worked with SMU Dining and the administration to extend dining hours last semester. After extending the closing time of the Arnold Dining Commons from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Mac’s Place from midnight to 1:00 a.m., SMU dining is considering a return to the old hours.

Student Sen. Claire Hermeling said in an interview Monday that a lack of student interest is causing the university to reconsider the necessity of the extended hours. Hermeling said the university will change back to the old hours if not enough students eat late into the night.

Student Senate announced the new hours in an emailed Senate Update on Dec. 9. Less than two months later, the university is prepared to pull the plug.

Student Body President Carlton Adams said he would be looking into the matter further.

Aramark and SMU Dining were unavailable to comment on the potential change.
