Jet revives classic rock spirit

As the writer of “Bad Press,” it’s my job todig through the piles of promotional CDs that record labels send tothe Entertainment desk in the hopes of getting a good review. Someof this music is flat-out putrid, most of it is mediocre, some isjust okay, but occasionally I run across an album that’sactually pretty good. “Get Born”, by the Aussie group,Jet, is one of these albums.

Heavily inspired by the classic rock pantheon of The Who, TheRolling Stones and The Beatles, “Get Born” is a returnto old-fashioned, tried-and-true rock roots. Rejecting theangst-ridden power-chord slinging common in this post-grunge era,Jet crafts a raw, rollicking rock sound. With songs like “AreYou Gonna Be My Girl,” “Look What You’veDone,” “Get Me Outta Here” and “Take It OrLeave It,” Jet successfully channels the spirit of classicrock, while at the same time forging a unique and innovative styleall of its own. How refreshing it is to actually hear rock‘n’ roll again!

Jet represents a stand against the hopeless melancholy that thegrunge movement brought to the rock scene. Even at its quietest andmost emotional, Jet remains upbeat and powerful, reminiscent ofclassic-era tunes by The Beatles and The Stones. It’s clearthat this group has an intense love for rock ‘n’ roll– both as an ideal and as an art form that can’t be fitinto a template or a cookie-cutter mould. While other groups mayhave their hearts in the commercial aspects of music, Jet is firstand foremost a group of musicians, a group of rockers, uncompromising in its devotion to the old ways of rock, andthey’re having a bloody great time all the while.
