Lamda Chi House on Monday

The house sat quietly with its main door propped open. The atmosphere was somber. Moving day had come, but no goodbye celebrations full of hope and promise were taking place.

Up the stairs to the right, down the winding hallway lined with boxes and bare walls, sophomore Jack Haake's room is decorated with two beds and a coffee table between them. In the corner beside a stack of LSAT prep books is the Band of Brothers DVD set.

Dr. Pepper cans litter the flat surfaces, and a sombrero hangs on one bed.

Haake is wearing his LXA letters, even though he's not supposed to as a former member in bad standing.

"I'm not going to leave until they do [put an eviction notice on my door]," Haake said. "I'm not going to leave because an alumni said I had to. The school owns the house—the school didn't kick me out. Texas State Law says you have 90 days to be evicted. And neither the national fraternity or the school is above the law."

Haake is sitting next to another sophomore, Hayden Blair. Both students were expelled last weekend from the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity because of charges THAT they say are a lie.

"We don't deserve this," Haake said.

SMU's Lambda Chi Alpha chapter saw 36 members expelled last Sunday after conducting a membership review the previous Saturday.

Forty-seven members saw all charges against them dropped and were returned to good standing within the organization. Several members, who were not expelled, as well as alumni, have resigned their membership from the fraternity. The Daily Campus could not find any official total concerning those who have resigned because the number keeps growing as each day passes.

According to John Holloway, director of chapter services of the international headquarters for Lambda Chi, the membership review came after a "thorough and sophisticated assessment" from which chapter alumni and international headquarters "corroborated reports of hazing, drug use in the chapter house and risky behaviors with little to no consequence at any level within the organization."

"None of us saw any of this coming," sophomore William Crouse said.

Crouse resigned from LXA after the membership review did not expel him. He had been the social chair.

Members were notified of their expulsions by letters dropped off at Hughes-Trigg. Many members' mothers were in attendance because it was Mothers' Weekend for the fraternity.

"The room went pandemonium," Haake said. "Some people were crying, people were screaming, moms were yelling—moms didn't know what was going on, moms still don't understand, we still don't understand."

Expelled members lost their standing in the organization and cannot live in the LXA house, wear insignia with the LXA letters or represent themselves as members of LXA.

Expelled members will be given pro-rated refunds for dues, housing and meals.

Those who lived in the house, both expelled and resigned, were given hotel accommodations paid for by LXA for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday night. After Tuesday, Alumni Control Board member and SMU alumnus ('05) Andrew Baker said the fraternity does not have an obligation for housing those members. Campus housing is being made available by SMU.

Thirty-one brothers lived in the house before the membership review, and all but eight have been expelled or have resigned.

"I'd rather take the charter from the ritual room downstairs, walk it across the street and give it to SAE than have 20 kids carry on what used to be our name," Haake said. "A fraternity of 20 men can't compete."

Among those expelled included all but three of the fraternity officers. Four freshmen that had only been full members for a week and a half were also expelled. They had been associate members for eight weeks.

"They paid [pledge dues] to have a miserable f**king existence," Haake said.

"Lambda Chi Alpha International Fraternity intends to further grow and develop a collaborative relationship with the SMU campus community and administration by ensuring our chapter provides a quality co-curricular experience where every man is treated with equality and respect," Holloway wrote in an e-mail. "We recognize that it is unfortunate for some that such an action was needed to identify individuals who exemplify our core values and traditions."

Members each sat for a 15-minute interview with alumni during the membership review.

SMU did not play a role in these proceedings and had no role in expelling members.

Holloway said the interviews "seek to establish better understanding in regards to chapter operations and the fitness of each individual in the restructuring and refocusing of the chapter."

LXA had been placed on probation for risk management violations by the international headquarters in January 2009. According to Holloway, the chapter was making "little progress" on completing the probation terms and additionally, "they had two more risk management incidents which violated state and local laws, General Fraternity laws and the policy of SMU."

The chapter then asked, in October, to be allowed to impose a self-governing plan that would correct their behaviors to the brotherhood's core values. However, Holloway wrote that the chapter "provided zero evidence" that they were following this plan, even after repeated promises to the contrary.

"In late February there were some efforts beginning to be reported, but the local alumni had reason to believe that there was still questionable behavior going on," Holloway wrote.

"Issues continued to arise and more focus on social enjoyment rather than responsible adherence to the standards of the brotherhood."

Blair and Haake denied that the fraternity had engaged in rampant drug use and hazing.

They said interviews were taken out of context and misconstrued. They also said the LXA headquarters had failed to tell them exactly why they were being kicked out.

Mr. Haake may say that he will never know why he was kicked out, but that's not because he wasn't told. He, like many others, felt that hazing, etc wasn't a problem since they (LXA) didn't do it as bad as other fraternities. The fact that you are attempting to appear like a persecuted random target simply makes the point more valid. Mr. Haake and his expelled contemporaries have done thousands of $ of damage to the house in a spoiled brat-like tantrum. The fact that the chapter would not uphold or couldn't enforce discipline (like an officer who broke into another fraterntiy and stole things) is why the local alumni (not the national organization) asked for intervention.

As far as SMU greeks go, the system had 4 fraternities complete membership reviews this year (Lambda Chi was just one of them). What does that say about the system at SMU?

I say, the rest of the guys in the fraternity should resign. Make lambda chi go bankrupt at smu. Or pull a beta and burn the house down

What a bunch of losers. It's a damn fraternity. Your friends are your friends, no matter who some national council deems to be a member in good standing. By the time my senior year rolled around, I could have cared less if my frat got kicked off or not.

I don't understand the excuse of "no one saw this coming" LXA was on probation since 2009. Your nationals gave you several opportunities to get your act together. They even let you try and fix the problem yourself. All I can say is good riddance. The less bad publicity SMU has the more my degree is worth! Who else can we clean off this campus??

It doesn't really matter who was right/wrong, what's done is done. Every fraternity goes through this cycle once a decade or so. The most important thing to remember is you all look like jack@sses fighting about this on the internet.

To all,

Please do not take the statements made by Jack Haake and Hayden Blair as accurate representations of members of Lambda Chi, expelled, resigned or in good standing. There were many great men who were expelled or resigned during this past weekend and the words of an emotional few should not be misconstrued as representative of the vast majority made up of good guys who simply chose to not appeal expulsion or resign by placing their friends over the fraternity. Even Haake and Blair ought to be forgiven for their statements. Knowing them personally, I can tell you that they are frustrated, exhausted and emotionally charged from the events of this weekend. While they are responsible for their words and I am not trying to that what they said is appropriate, I hope that you will not judge them solely upon their quotations in this article; Everyone has their moments.

From a member who remains (and who is willing to post their name with their comment) I would like to reiterate that the series of events that took place this weekend has left many angry, exhausted and confused. However, we have reached a place, current and past members alike, where we can all continue to focus on the painful and confusing past or we can look to the future and be hopeful.

I personally will continue to be a member of this place until I am forcefully removed. Lambda Chi has a rich, positive history on SMU's campus and with the help from the men still left, the SMU community and our alumni I'm sure we can get back to the great place we once were.

Never did I call the members who are left "socially inept", rather stated my opinion that on a grand scale nationals would rather have "socially inept" members than members who can attain a 3.8 gpa and still go out during the week and have a good time. Also thank you for your childish correction of my "there" and "their", that really does prove a great deal about my integrity.... I know that the brothers left live highly balanced lives. The finger-pointing and generalizations you just demonstrated seem are a perfect example of how the expelled brothers were treated last weekend. Nationals preach forgiveness but fail to forgive and blindly persecute and belittle members in 15 minute interview and on the internet. WWJD...?

To expelled brother -

How do you claim "brotherhood" when you call the members who are left "socially inept." Seriously? You seem jealous that the current brothers in good standing have not been expelled. And also, you call your college career "balanced," even though you don't know the obvious difference between "there" and "their." You deserve the expulsion, and not to be in good standing with the men of integrity who are left.

Haake and Blair were undoubtedly the worst two members the daily campus could have chosen to interview. As an expelled member I am extremely embarrassed by their comments and I know most of the expelled brothers feel the same way. It is truly a shame that Haake and Blair could simply prove Nationals were right by there attitudes in this article. There is so much more underlying in this situation that this article could never even attempt to touch. The entire situation was just a waste of time and good men, and any other nationals would have been thrilled to have our brotherhood. But Lambda Chi Alpha nationals "holds itself to a higher standard" and would rather have socially inept members who buy into their "holier than thou" attitude than members who can successfully balance there college careers.

Wasn't Haake the moron who broke into the SAE house and stole a bunch of stuff weeks ago? Why didnt the chapter just expel him then? What a joke. His arrogance is only dwarfed by his ignorance. I saw the letter that LCA sent to the school about the problems, how was this all a surprise? Haake and Blair have made those of us that value being at SMU look terrible - just drop the drama. I cant believe these grown men are acting like this -Callahan is crying in that other article and now these guys. If your old enough to drink you should be old enough to think.

As a member now in good standing, no one liked what has happened. Every knows about the review process, but yet no one is willing to stand up to it. To me, that sounds like they have no case and truly are either quitting or did bad things in LXA. I don't actually know the truth, but no one of my previous brothers were bad people. Not a one. I know all of them very well. John Holloway aka "Biff" is the biggest jerk and liar to ever have been associated to LXA and every one who knows him is sorry to know him. He is the root main cause to this whole thing, his misconstrued and two-faced position on what we have or haven't done. Don't hate or blame LXA for this. Blame Biff and his band of idiots.

Many members were kept that hadn't payed their bills. Your point is irrelevant, but thanks for trying. Also, discussing personal finances on an open forum is unprofessional and sad.

I find it amazing that Blair did not pay ANY of his fraternity bill the entire 2009-2010 academic year and Jack Haake stopped payment on his full spring semester bill 2 weeks before the membership review and after an assessment of his chapter members was completed. It seems that these two young men represent the best of the worst in that chapter and they wonder why a membership review was conducted. I am sure they could appeal their expulsions if they feel this strongly that the actions lacked merit.

Zeta-

Congratulations on being in line with the national fraternity of Lambda Chi Alpha. You have successfully adapted their ways of making a judgment without knowing any relevant facts. Do you know Mr. Haake or Mr. Blair? Do you know the other 40 (and growing) members who since resigned after seeing great men kicked out of their brotherhood? Let me take a stab at this one. No you do not. I am glad that your local chapter was able to survive a membership review, and maybe in your case, the review was merited. However, I can tell you that if you do your research on this subject you may come to find that you will regret your previous comment.

Just as you cannot learn about a man's character in a 15 minute interview...please don't attempt to do the same from a 1 1/2 page article.

I am a remaining member of Lambda Chi Alpha at SMU. I, as most in our chapter, believe that this membership review was unwarranted. I have been pressured by those expelled to turn in my resignation. However, I believe that it is my duty to help rebuild this chapter. LXA has always been a house of gentlemen with values. I will remain in this chapter to help it bounce back, and especially to help the freshman see how good it can be. This article makes us look awful, and I feel sorry that Haake and Blair have embarrased themselves. We will not resign, and our chapter will continue to grow. Thank you.

First off...having been a member of a fraternity I can say it is not worth it anymore.

The values and ideals Fraternities were once founded on are no longer prevelant in today's Greek Chapters at SMU. It is a popularity contest based on money, drugs, drinking, and partying. I can name at least one more in every house pretty much that does hardcore drugs...so this is not a surprise to me.

To those that got expelled in LXA...you are BETTER OFF. The Greek System is not what it used to be...they attempt to portray class, brotherhood, and integrity...when they are actually classless, selfish, and completed two-faced.
