Mitch Enright at the center of attention

SMU Mustang center Mitch Enright, is no stranger to national interest and honors, but he can now add another honor to his résumé.

In addition to being recognized by organizations such as ESPN The Magazine, Academic All-District Football Team and winner of the Conference USA Academic Medal, Enright is now the recipient of the 2009 Anson Mount Scholar/Athlete award presented by the 53rd-annual Playboy Preseason All-America football team.

According to smumustangs.com, Enright graduated with a management major and a 3.99 GPA. Because of his academic achievements, he will be the first Mustang athlete to be featured in a Playboy article, and SMU will be given $5,000 for a scholarship fund in Enright’s honor.

The Anson Mount Scholar/Athlete award is given to an athlete with exceptional dedication to both their sport and academics with the intention of motivating other student athletes. In fall of 2008, Enright started all 12 regular season games for the Mustangs.

According to smumustangs.com, Enright has also been named An Area Top 100 player according to the Dallas Morning News, Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Rivals.com, as well as being ranked the No. 88 player in Texas according to SuperPrep.

However, Enright could care less about personal achievements when his team is so close and so hungry for wins, especially after two back-to-back 1-11 seasons. And with quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell in his second year throwing to elite receivers Emmanuel Sanders and Aldrick Robinson, the team feels closer than ever to a bowl.

“We’re going bowling this season,” Enright explained when asked how he expected the next few months to play out. “Anything less than six wins will be a disappointment.”

Six wins would make the SMU Mustangs eligible for the chance to compete in a bowl game this fall. The last time the Mustangs went 6-6 was in 2006, but they missed their chance to guarantee a bowl spot by losing to Rice in the final game.

The team is up for the challenge and excited about the prospect of a winning season. As this is Enright’s fifth and final year playing with the Mustangs, he and the entire squad hope to see some successful “bowling” in the future for this team.
