The SMU women’s basketball traveled to the University of North Texas last night and will return to Dallas with another win, crushing the UNT Mean Green 80-58.

The Mustangs now has a season record of 6-1, the only loss occurred against Boston College over the weekend; UNT sank to 3-5.

“It’s a big game for them [North Texas], it’s a big game for us. It’s always a big game when you play a cross town rival,” SMU head coach Rhonda Rompola said before yesterday’s game.

The Mustangs secured their lead early in the game, entering half time ahead 41-35. Earlier this week, Rompola explained that her team needed to remain intense during the entire game.

“We have to find a way to always get our focus back, we can’t play mediocre and expect to beat the teams,” Rompola said.

It appears that despite a slight dip in scoring before the end of the half, allowing North Texas to reduce the Mustang lead to only four points, SMU was able to maintain the same level of play in the second half.

As anticipated by Rompola, the team continued to have a lot of success with a few key players. Christine Elliot was the team’s top scorer with 18 points. She also earned her first double-double of the season. Haley Day came in close with 16 points.

SMU now has a week to prepare before taking on cross-town rival TCU in Moody Coliseum at 7 p.m. on Dec. 9.
