The women’s soccer team dropped a 6-2 loss to the University of Memphis Tigers in the opening round of the Conference USA Tournament Wednesday night at Westcott Field.

SMU had already lost to Memphis once this season in a 2-0 loss at Westcott Field in October. SMU now stands at 1-3-1 in C-USA Championships, losing to East Carolina last season in the tournament.

Memphis, looking to repeat at C-USA champions, got on the board early with a six yard pass to Julia Ignacio from teammate Ashley Berra in the 11th minute to put the Tigers up 1-0. Just two minutes later, Lizzy Simonin caught a cross pass from her teammate, sending the ball past SMU goalkeeper Courtney Webb for Memphis’ second goal.

The third goal for Memphis came in the 18th minute when Taylor Isenhower connected a breakaway shot from Memphis’ Tori Dalton from 25 yards back.

Down 3-0, SMU senior defender Kim Peabody shot a pass from sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Eidson from midfield to settle the score at 3-1 to end the half. Peabody’s first goal of the season happened in her final game as a Mustang.

The Tigers scored almost immediately in the second half when Berra scored her 14th goal of the season with an unassisted shot into the top left corner of the net.

SMU’s Kristin Medeiros scored a second goal and final goal for the Mustangs with an assist from Ryanne Lewis, but it still wasn’t enough for the win.

Wednesday’s loss marks the second time in as many years the Mustangs have lost in the opening round of the conference tournament.

SMU finished their season at 7-11-1 overall and 5-6-1 in C-USA play.

Memphis will play the Colorado College Tigers on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
