SMU libraries kick off charity ‘food for fines’ program

The Central University Libraries kicked off their “food for fines” program this week just in time for the holidays. Students, faculty and staff can bring cans or non-perishable food items to campus libraries in exchange for waiving library fines.

The donated food will be given to the North Texas Food Bank.

Each donation of a can or package of non-perishable food is equal to a $2 credit off library fines. This waiver can be applied to materials from Fondren Library Center, Hamon Arts Library, and the ISEM Reading Room.

However, this waiver will not apply to lost book replacement charges or processing fees.

“This is just one very small way, as a community, we can help those less fortunate than ourselves during the holiday season,” Gillian McCombs, dean and director of Central University Libraries, said. “And you don’t have to have a library fine to contribute a can of food!”

The waiver program will run until Dec. 16.
