SMU participates in 7th annual North Texas Giving Day

On Sept. 22, SMU participated with 2500 local organizations in North Texas Giving Day, a day that allows national and worldwide constituents to donate money to North Texas nonprofits. Shortly after noon, SMU had raised over $10,000. Donations can still be given on the SMU giving page.

Created in 2009 by the Communities Foundation of Texas, North Texas Giving Day continues to be one of the largest online funding events in the nation. In 2015, the event raised $33 million.

As of 2 p.m. on Thursday, over $15 million had been raised. The leaderboard for giving includes many private schools such as Westlake Academy Foundation and Cistercian Preparatory School. The North Texas Food Bank and The Salvation Army DFW Metroplex Command also ranked high on the leaderboard.

From 6 a.m. to midnight, donations are collected via the North Texas Giving Day website and vis-à-vis donation stations hosted by nonprofits around the North Texas area.

Those looking to donate can allocate funds to specific categories, nonprofits or counties. Proceeds go to nonprofits in the realm of animals, domestic violence, healthcare and medical research, public safety and others.

Many sponsors of this event have been major donors to SMU in the past such as the Harold Simmons Foundation, The Morris Foundation and The Meadows Foundation.
