Sunny days, stress bring students to Barr Pool

It’s a sunny day, music is playing, and students arescattered around on chairs and the lawn around the Barr Pool. Theyenjoy doing homework, sleeping, reading magazines and talking, aswell as swimming laps and doing tricks off the diving boards.

“If it is sunny we’ll be here. Even if its just foran hour,” said sophomore Cris Cangero, who especially enjoysrelaxing outside in the chairs scattered around the pool.”They’ve got the music going. It’s just a greatatmosphere.”

Since many students consider getting a tan to be an importantpart of the season, frequent exposure to the sun is the preferredway to achieve that coveted golden brown skin.

“I’m excited to go back home to New York andeveryone be jealous of my tan,” said first-year Emily Vallar, who goes to the pool with her friends after and betweenclasses.

First-year Jenna Leet finds that being outside and going to thepool helps her relieve stress.

“Especially with finals coming up, I’ve being goingto the pool a lot more because I have so much stuff going on. Iabsolutely love being outside,” Leet said.

Many students are aware of the pool and its facilities, althoughprobably 80 percent of the campus doesn’t make use of it,pool manager Heidi Joyce said, although the pool is free and oncampus.

At certain hours of the day students may use swimming lanes, andthe diving boards are open to anyone, although the platforms areoff-limits, Joyce said.

Joyce and the rest of the guards encourage all students to comeand enjoy the facility.

The pool is also available in the evenings. Any organization canrent it out at night. For example, Program Council will showPirates of the Caribbean on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
