Women’s golf comes in 12th in Alamo

After the cancelation of the first two rounds of the Alamo Invitational, the SMU women’s golf team finishes 12th yesterday afternoon. The Mustangs competed against Baylor University, Middle Tennessee State, University of Mississippi, University of Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas State, Texas A&M, UT-San Antonio, Nebraska, Tennessee and University of Wisconsin. This was the first time the Mustangs have participated in the Alamo Invitational in recent seasons.

Tennessee, ranked No. 7, won the tournament at 289 and A&M and Notre Dame tied for second place at 292. SMU finished at 319. SMU finished only one point behind Texas State who finished at 318.

The only SMU golfer to break 80 was junior, Tia Gannon. Gannon finished with six over-79. Freshman, Tanya Wadhwa, was SMU’s top finisher with 5-over 77 according to smumustangs.com. In 2008 Wadhwa was the winner of the Texas Women’s Open, and named Girls Junior Player of the Year by DFW Links Magazine.

The Mustangs seem to have lost the momentum they built earlier this month when they participated in the Heather Farr/CU Memorial Invitational. The team finished 7th out of 20 teams competing, although no SMU golfers were in the top 10 individually.

The team will not compete again until February 7 to 9, in the Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. Purdue University will host the event at Coco Beach Golf Course. SMU will have the opportunity to spend several months preparing to match up against teams they struggled against yesterday such as Baylor University Wisconsin, Texas Tech and Oklahoma. Other Classic participants include: Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Kent State, Indiana, Iowa State, Michigan, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Penn State and Purdue. The team has four more events, including the Puerto Rico Classic, prior to the start of the C-USA Championship on April 18.
