VIDEO: Profile of SMU Political Science Professor Joe Kobylka

SMU Political Science Professor Joe Koblyka is a memorable man.

He teaches SMU students about American government, political thought, law, and the supreme court

Kobylka enjoys teaching undergraduates what college is really about.

Ryan Stoker, a political science major said, “college is to teach you how to think.”

Kobylka describes education as a kind of two way street–a mutual learning experience. He strives to enhance undergraduate learning

He is a Wisconsin native, but has been teaching at SMU since 1983.

Kobylka has been married for 35 years to his high school sweetheart.

He and his wife have three children

His youngest son has down syndrome.

Kobylka said, “working with someone whose limits are so obvious, um, gives you a sense of humility, gives you a sense of humanity.”

While, his son’s mental disability was a shock, Jeff is also one of his greatest teachers and a true blessing.

Kobylka’s life consists of baseball, teaching, reading, keeping up with the news and the happenings of the Supreme Court, and of course running.

“I’ve run everyday for 3,896 consecutive days,” he said.

He is also finishing a biography on justice Harry Blackmun.

But more than anything with his students Kobylka hopes to leave behind a meaningful legacy.

“What you leave in people is a part of you. And when you cease to be those people who you affected continue,” he said. “It’s a wonderful way of achieving a sort of immortality.”
