Big men help get big win

Inside their home away from home at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, the SMU Mustangs (4-1) were able to defeat the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions (2-3) by a score of 87-61 with the help of a dominant effort from the team’s big men and overall shooting.

Junior centers Yanick Moreira and Cannen Cunningham led the team with six rebounds apiece, but also contributed a total of 34 points. While starter Moreira finished tops on the squad with 19 on 6-of-6 shooting, Cunningham came off the bench to add 15 on five makes in six attempts.

SMU struggled a bit early on, trading buckets with the Golden Lions through the first ten minutes of the contest and even trailed by as much as five. Head coach Larry Brown was able to calm his team down however and directed them on a 17-7 run before the end of the first half to take a 10-point lead into the locker room.

From that point on, the Mustangs were in control on both sides of the court, as shown by the second half point differential of 46-30.

The entire Mustang team shot the lights out, making 67 percent of their shots from the field even though the 12 attempted shots behind the 3-point line were converted just three times. What didn’t get converted beyond the arc was made at the foul line however. While APB only managed to knock in 11 free throws, the Mustangs had 25 chances from the charity stripe and made 20.

At 4-1 the Mustangs have started out hot, and will need this type of effort against their next opponent, Sam Houston State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Garland.
