It’s that time again! Meet the volleyball freshman libero Isabella Sotelo.

Sotelo is from Austin, Texas and has lived there her whole life. She attended St. Michaels Catholic Academy and came to SMU because it is close to home, but not too close. She loved the smaller campus feel in a big urban city, and she absolutely loved the coaching staff and team.

Sotelo stressed a few things that have been different in her transition from high school to collegiate athletics.

“Everything is faster, the practices and games are much more intense and the competition is way more fun,” Sotelo said.

In her free time she loves to go out on the lake, Lake Austin in particular. She loves to travel and, unlike many, wash dishes. Volleyball isn’t her only sport. In high school Sotelo was on the lacrosse team which won state its senior year.

Sotelo shared some interesting facts about herself with The Daily Campus. She has been zip-lining in two different countries, she writes left handed, she loves cereal, she brushes her teeth for 10 minutes at a time and she “drinks more water than your average fish.”

So far at SMU she has enjoyed being on the volleyball team and meeting new people.

If you see Sotelo on campus make sure to say hello! You can also come out and cheer her and the rest of the Mustangs on as they host Georgia Tech at Moody Coliseum on Friday at 7 p.m.

Now, meet McKenzie Shea: a 5-10 setter, born and raised in Plano, Texas where she attended Plano East High School. Her close knit family means the world to her and her older sisters, Caycee and Allie, are her role models. Allie also attended SMU.

“I picked SMU because it is close to home and it is an amazing school,” Shea said. “I love the campus so much, and I also get to play the sport I love while getting an education from such a great school.”

She started playing volleyball when she was six years old and she couldn’t have found something she loved more. Outside of volleyball she enjoys shopping, and if she could live anywhere, it would be by a beach.

After she graduates she plans on traveling anywhere and everywhere.

“I want to go to so many places,” Shea said. “I then plan on moving back to Dallas to stay close to my family and getting a job in the business field of some sort.”

Shea shared some interesting facts about herself starting with how she doesn’t go anywhere without wearing earrings because she feels naked without them. And, she is a dancing queen.

“Normally when a song starts playing I will start dancing even if I dont know the words,” Shea said.

Unlike her teammate, Sotelo, she does not know how to do her laundry.

“Oops, I should probably learn how to do that,” Shea joked.

She has a shoe obsession, as well. The only problem is she will buy them then never were them.

Make sure to come out and support Shea, Sotelo and the rest of the Mustangs this weekend as they host the Doubletree Invitational at Moody Coliseum.
