Men’s soccer defeats Gamecocks 3-2

The SMU men’s soccer team outlasted the South Carolina Gamecocks 3-2 in double overtime on Wednesday night at Euguene E. Stone III Stadium.

The Mustangs drew first blood in the 17 minutes in when Diogo de Almeida scored from eight yards out off a rebounded save.

The Gamecocks responded seven minutes later with the equalizer when senior defender/midfielder Danny Cates’ cross was deflected by SMU goalkeeper Jaime Ibarra and senior midfielder Stephen Morrissey shot it off the deflection. The game was scoreless for another 60 minutes.

In the 83rd minute, the Gamecocks took the lead 2-1 when sophomore midfielder/forward Bradlee Baladez scored off the cross from junior defender Mike Mangotic. The Mustangs would even the match at five minutes later with only a minute and a half to play in regulation when Arthur Ivo scored on a penalty kick for the Mustangs.

After a scoreless first overtime period, the game proceeded into a second.

After a handball was called on the Gamecocks, the Mustangs got a free kick from 20 yards out. Ivo scored straight off the kick and the Mustangs took the victory.

The Mustangs improved their season record to 7-4-1 and 2-1-1 in Conference USA. SMU’s next game is Sunday at Wescott Field against Florida International at 7 p.m.
