The SMU men’s swimming team has hired a new assistant coach that starts on Monday Sept. 16, 2013.

UConn graduate and former student-athelete, Mitch Dansky, is replacing Andy Kershaw. Kershaw was named University of Miami’s head women’s swimming and diving coach.

“Mitch is a young, energetic, enthusiastic coach that will excite our team,” said SMU Head Coach Eddie Sinnott to swimswam.com. “The team will really benefit from his attitude and his work ethic.”

Dansky spent a year as UConn’s coaching assistant, serving as a recruitment coordinator and surpervising spring workouts for the Huskies. UConn set 16 school records last season.

According to swimswam.com, Dansky is ready for a challenge at SMU. He has previously coached at Greenwood Memorial Swim Club in Gardner, Mass. and the U.S. national team that sent three swimmers to the 2012 Olympic Trials.

The fact that he has competed and coached against the same teams in the American Athletic Conference will allow him to inspire SMU’s team, according to Sinnott.

The men’s swimming and diving team has won 16 of the past 17 conference championships. SMU competes against TCU in Fort Worth to start the season on Wednesday Nov. 13 at 6 p.m.
