Mustangs lose to San Francisco at Aztec Invitational

SMU’s volleyball team lost to San Francisco in their first match of the Aztec Invitational in San Diego on Friday. The match went to five sets where the Mustangs lost in the fifth 15-13. The entire match went back and forth the whole time (25-21, 27-29, 27-25, 21-25, 15-13).

The Mustangs forced a fifth game by beating San Francisco in the fourth set 25-21. In the fifth set, SMU had a lead of 11-8 but ended up losing that lead when the Dons used an SMU misplay to spark a four-point run to win the match, according to smumustangs.com/sports.

San Francisco had two players who scored 21 kills.

The leaders for the Mustangs were Abbey Bybel led with 17 kills and seven digs and Caroline Young with 16 kills. Other highlights included first-year Kristen Stehling with 11 kills, Maddie Lozano with 10 and Avery Acker with her third double-double of the season with 55 assists and 15 digs.

SMU’s next game starts at 12 p.m. CT on Saturday against Harvard. They also play again on Saturday night at 7 CT against Northeastern to end the Aztec Invitational.
