The SMU Women’s Basketball team fell to the Houston Cougars 63-54 in Head Coach Rhonda Rompola’s final home game. Coach Rompola was honored before the game, celebrating her commitment to SMU Women’s Basketball after a combined 35 years coaching and playing for the Mustangs.
After playing on the team for a year, Rompola immediately transitioned into a coaching position for the team. She was then named as the team’s head coach in 1991. During her tenure as coach, Rompola has tallied an impressive 438-316 record, giving her the most victories as a coach in SMU history.
The game also increased player and team accolades as Alicia Froling tied Rompola’s record for double-doubles in a season with her 13th as she scored 14 points and tallied 12 rebounds. In addition, the Mustangs set the single season block record, recording a total of 166 blocks, including seven against Houston, passing the 160 blocks recorded last season.
Mckenzie Adams led the team with 18 points, and Gabrielle Wilkins contributed five points and seven rebounds in her final home game as a Mustang.
In her post game interview, Rompola commented on the Mustangs’ difficulty to establish a rhythm by making shots, something she believes has hindered the team all season. SMU made just 27.4 percent of their field goals and failed to make a single three point shot, going 0-13 from beyond the arc.
SMU will travel to East Carolina Monday, Feb. 26 before traveling to Connecticut for the conference tournament. And, while Rompola fell in her final game in Moody Coliseum, she has posted a 239-95 record at home during her tenure.
