SMU volleyball falls to Tulsa 3-1

The Mustangs were coming off of a big two-win weekend against Tulane and Houston, but couldn’t carry out the win streak against Tulsa.

SMU volleyball traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma to take on the Golden Hurricane for a 3-1 loss.

Mustang Caroline Young returned to the front row for the first time since her ankle injury against Memphis on Oct. 5. Young posted her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 10 kills and 10 digs.

SMU is now 15-4 overall and 4-3 in American Athletic Conference play while Tulsa improved to 11-7 overall and 3-4 in the AAC.

SMU had several standouts starting with Kristen Stehling who scored 14 kills. Avery Acker recorded 47 assists and 15 digs, marking her 14th double-double of the season. Morgan Heise led SMU with 18 digits, but that wasn’t enough to fight off Tulsa’s pair of players with 19 digs each, putting them at 80 as a team.

In the first set Tulsa started strong, scoring the first seven points but the Mustangs fought back putting the score at 12-12. Not much later, at 17-17 Tulsa went on an 8-1 run ending the first set.

In the second the Mustangs came out strong and the Golden Hurricane came back once again in a late charge, beating the Mustangs 25-23.

It wasn’t until the third set that the Mustangs posted a 25-19 win. SMU took an early 7-6 lead and didn’t trail the rest of the set. Young and Stehling each had five kills, while the Mustangs held Tulsa to only six.

The fourth set was a different story as Tulsa took a 6-1 lead to start the set and SMU was unable to bounce back. SMU had only 11 kills in the set while Tulsa had 13. Bybel had three of the Mustangs kills, finishing with a team-high 15.

SMU returns home to host East Carolina in Moody Coliseum at 1 p.m. on Sunday. After that the Mustangs will be on the road for three straight games before returning to Moody.
