Women’s soccer brings second victory at home

The SMU women’s soccer team defeated Southern Mississippi University 3-1 at Westcott Field on Sunday. The Mustang victory is the second one of the conference season, and keeps the Mustangs in the top four of Conference-USA.

SMU opened up the score to lead early in the game in the fourth minute of the first half.

Mustang midfielder Mallory Baum found a open space near the post on the left side of the goal.

Baum was 10-yards out from the goal and fired the ball right past Southern Miss’ goalkeeper Hannah Vanderboegh, earning her third goal for the season.

The Mustangs doubled their lead in the 35th minute of the match. Mustang forward Kenzie Scovill found the ball on a rebound and was able to strike it past Vanderboegh for her third goal of the season.

Just nine minutes before the end of the match, Southern Miss’ senior midfielder Elisha Tarbell headed the ball to the top right corner of the goal. The play was started from a free kick outside the box, put in by Southern Miss’ sophomore midfielder Danielle Beatty.

The Mustangs responded with their third goal of the match in the 86th minute. After a corner kick by junior midfielder Mallory Baum, senior defender Kaitlyn Eidson headed the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

“That’s my only chance to score since I play defense. I think for me is a bonus if I score. If I can help out my forwards any way I can to relieve some pressure of them to score, I’ll be happy do it,” said Eidson who marked her eighth goal of her career at SMU.

The Mustangs finished off the match with a 15-3 shot advantage over the Golden Eagles, totaling seven more shots on target over Southern Miss (10-3).

The SMU women’s soccer team now holds an overall record of 6-4-0 and 2-0-0 in the conference. As for the Golden Eagles, their overall record worsens at 3-5-3 for the season and 0-1-1in the conference.

The Mustangs will host in-state rival Rice on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. for the fourth home game in a row.
