40 days of self-control

One student is going gluten free, another is giving up sweets, and another is trying to stay positive. The season of Lent is upon us.

Lent is the 40 days before Easter when people choose to give up something up in order to grow closer to God. With Lent starting next week, many students have started to think about what they are giving up.

Sophomore Hannah Ellison plans to go gluten free this year. She believes that Lent gives her motivation for the rest of the year. In past years, she has gone vegan for Lent.

“After going vegan for 40 days, I became a full time vegetarian,” said Ellison, “I have been a vegetarian for four years now.”

Freshman Margaret Fuller is giving up sweets this year. She has given up sweets in past years, but has never followed through. She plans to stick with it this year.

“Now that I have spring break booked, I plan to stick with it,” said Fuller.

Some students try to do something extra instead of giving something up. Junior Aj Johnson is trying to be more positive. She hopes that 40 days of a positive attitude will transfer over to the rest of the year.

“I think Lent is a good time to set goals for yourself, whether it’s for religious reasons or personal reasons,” said Johnson.
