Ed Board wants improved access to North Quad

How many of you could come up with 400 words about a relevant topic every day? Well, that’s what the members of Ed Board have to do on a regular basis.

As the end of the semester approaches, our minds are drawn more and more to plans for the summer: internships; the beautiful weather outside; graduation; where we might live next semester; and all those other spring things that college students think about.

In fact, sometimes we become so involved with our daydreams we forget to look for things to criticize, critique or let students know about.

But that’s not the case today.

No, today we would like to know what the deal is with those posts next to the Owen Fine Arts Center, commonly referred to as Meadows.

For those of you unfamiliar with this location, let us fill you in. From the North quad there are two ways to go, either out onto the Boulevard and down to Mockingbird, or towards Meadows.

The road past Meadows opens out almost directly onto Hillcrest, useful for leaving campus in the north or westerly directions. It is also useful for getting onto campus from the north or west side.

However, that route has been closed off. Posts have been put up to prevent vehicles from traveling that direction.

They were erected last semester after an accident of some sort. Now, Ed Board is no fan of accidents, but we do enjoy the ability to come and go from campus without having to deal with that awful mess that is Bishop and Mockingbird.

On Sundays, it can take as long as a half an hour to make a left turn at that intersection. It would be quicker to walk to Mockingbird Station than to drive on days like that.

This silliness must cease. Ed Board has a solution. Take down the barricades next to Meadows, and post signs making the street either an entrance or an exit. Two-way traffic is too dangerous, but that path is there for a reason, students should be able to use it.

Ed Board believes that many would appreciate an exit from the North quad onto Hillcrest.

Let’s see if the administration can get to work on it over the summer.
