Doak Walker winner talks about college, NFL

Larry Johnson, the winner of the 2003 Doak Walker Award for the most outstanding running back in college football, answered more questions after Tuesday night’s Athletic Forum. Saturday, there will be more from legendary running back Earl Campbell, winner of the Doak Walker Legends Award.

Larry, what is it like being around such great players of the game?

Johnson: It is actually kind of funny really. I have never really experienced anything like this. I always watch these guys on TV, but I never get a chance to meet them in person. This has really been a great experience for my family and me.

What was it like leaving college after a successful year?

Johnson: It was very satisfying. This year we did it for the younger guys on the team. The team had not been to a bowl game in a couple of years, so we really wanted to show them what it is like this year. The seniors all came together and proved it to them.

What was it like playing for Coach Paterno and at the same time having your dad on the football coaching staff?

Johnson: I liked having Paterno as a coach. Most kids today don’t like having an old school coach, but I did. We all respected him. He has so many values and he is a hard worker. We do not look at him as an old man, he acts like a thirty-year-old. Having my dad around made everything better. All year-round I had someone to answer to, which was good.

What are you doing to prepare for the NFL?

Johnson: Right now I am focusing on my speed. It is extremely tough trying to fit a workout into my days right now. I am always moving around the country. If I have time in my hotel room, I try to exercise.
