Elevator plunges in downtown Dallas

Elevator plunges in downtown Dallas

Early Wednesday morning, an elevator car plunged in a downtown Dallas skyscraper, leaving one woman injured.

The Dallas Fire-Rescue arrived on the scene at 9:20 a.m. after reports of the emergency in the 900 block of Main Street at the Bank of America Plaza.

Firefighters discovered that the braking system caused the elevator car to come to an abrupt stop after falling. They brought the car up to an accessible level near the 70th floor before freeing the woman inside.

WFAA journalist David Goins tweeted a video of the scene:

The woman, whose name has not been released, was hospitalized but officials said her injuries were not life threatening. According to The Dallas Morning News, she was the car’s only occupant.

SMU sophomore, Celine Horner, goes downtown often and is concerned about the safety of elevators.

“That would absolutely terrify me,” she said. “I’m glad the woman is safe.”

Officials say it is still unknown how the car fell, but they are working to resolve the problem.
